I need help. My sister-in-law wants a cake for a party that she is having 11/04, she wants a french vanilla cake batter ( no problem) , but then she tells me that she tasted some kind of Fruity Icing on a cake that a lady she works with brought into work and that's what type of icing she wants on the cake (well, the lady wouldn't tell her how to make the icing, she just said that it was a tropical icing) Do anyone knows what type of icing this is or have an idea of a kind of icing I can make?icon_cry.gif

hahaha, she thinks she's smart by not telling, but she doesn't know you have US!! icon_lol.gif Go to the local cake and candy making aisle and pick out the LorAnn flavoring of your choice. They have fruit flavors and even tropical flavors like Pina Colada!! The only trick... you have to pick a color that is clear, unless you are making colored icing, or don't care about it being bright white!!

Melvira, Thank you for your help. Are LorAnn flavorings more likely found at Cake supply stores instead of grocery stores?

Melvira, you're so smart. I never thought to try different flavorings for b/c. I thought using almond was exotic!

If you have an actual cake supply store near you, ask them if they sell Icing Fruit. If not, ask them if they can order it. I use it in my buttercream, and I love it.

Icing fruit is fruit that is specially processed to NOT thin down the consistency of your icing. CK makes a very good one. I am not familiar with other brands.

If you need something multi-flavored, try googling for Watkins icing recipes. They have an 5 or 6 flavored icing that is extract based, and developed to not thin down with all the extra additions of liquid.

Some grocery stores carry Lorann oils in/near the pharmacy icon_confused.gif Not sure why...

Some oils, like clove and peppermint, are used medicinally. Clove is alleged to help cure earaches, while peppermint soothes the stomach. There are other oils that do other things, but since Grandma passed on, the knowledge went with her.

Ask your SIL if she can describe the icing to you? Was it just tropical in taste or was there something else in it? Did it have fruit bits or something else? Was it a light icing like whipped ones or was it more heavy like buttercreams?

During the holidays you can usually find the LorAnn oils at Wal-Mart otherwise try your cake deco store. In my experience the oils have not watered down the icing becuase you don't use that much of it. You can always omit some of the liquid if you have that problem. I recommend it for making fun flavors! Also, just regular spice brands like Tone's sells peppermint and other flavors like that which make awesome additions to BC!!

I have used the regular orange flavoring at the grocery store. You might experiment with 2 or 3 flavors to get a tropical flavor.

What about coolaid? There are threads about using it to make red. You could make it any flavor that you want. It will color the cake the color of the frosting.

Thanks for all of your replies. I did find the LorAnn flavorings in the candy making section of one of the Cake supply stores. I never knew there was so many flavors to choose from. I did find 'Tropical Punch' and 'Tutty Fruitty' and I added some of the flavoring to my b/c icing and it turned out great, my sister-in-law was pleased!

Thanks again for the help.
