Do any of you feel that you are not consistent? I feel like there are some days that I can put out a cake that looks fairly professional. Other days (like a horse cake I did today but did not upload) my work just seems to look careless or sloppy and I just feel like I "can't do it right".
Is there some sort of reason why some days I feel like everything "clicks" but other days I just feel clumsy? How do some decorators make every single cake a breathtaking work of art?
Alot of times I'll just get to where I'm feeling pretty confident and then I'll have a day where my stuff just doesn't look good. Crooked lines, wiggly lines, messy edges.... what is my problem?
I know exactly how you feel ... some days I just feel that everything I touch goes horribly wrong. Tonight being one of them. I'm in the middle of doing a 25th anniversary (needed a break) right now and I can't stand what I am doing to it! I'm hoping that it won't look so bad after 20 minutes away from it. Oh, and it's 1:16am here - at least another hour or so to go and I have a nasty cold right now.
No confidence for me today .... hopefully tomorrow. ![]()
Yes I know what you mean. I think somedays our hearts are just not in it. We could be tired, have other things on our minds or not really loving the design of the cake. Or it could be a whole new style of cake and it takes awhile to learn the steps.
However, I looked at your cakes and I see nothing but very professional looking cakes. Hard to believe you have a bad day.

I think we all have this problem, well at least I know I do. There are some days that I can make the best looking cake ever, and other days that I couldnt pipe a stright line to save my life.
Sometimes I worry about this problem for days ahead of time when I have a big cake to do. I know when I dont the last wedding cake I worried about it for days, scared to death that I would be having a bad day when I had to do the cake. Thank god I didnt and everything turned out great.
I dont really know why this happens, but dont feel alone, cause I have the same problem.
Why do we put ourselves through it. I think we are our worst critics. I stress out and when it is all over I think what was that about! Yes somedays it goes spoton and others I have to step back and return later or leave it until the next day and things a little different. You are not alone so hang in there. There is a light at the end of the tunnel or is that the sun coming up. lol

I don't post the ones I do on a bad day.
I have two cakes this weekend that I'm not real happy about so...oh well. Hopefully the customers won't notice anything wrong.
Kitagrl, Yup happens to me too. I really don't think the customers notice though. It's just that we can be such perfectionists. I get a picture in my head of how I want the cake to look and sometimes it just doesn't come out how I wanted it to....or maybe I just had a lot of problems trying to make it all come together. Like my volvo/spaceship cake. I had nothing but trouble with it and hated how it turned out, but everyone loved it. I even got another order for a car cake from it. I was like...really??? Are you sure you want a car cake?? I'm actually doing the car cake this weekend. A VW beetle, and I planned it out a lot better and am happy with how it's going this time.
Good luck! You are an amazing cake artist!

been there done that... there are days when my icing goes on perfect, smooth, without a hitch then BAM! the day from hell. Those are the days i have an extra cuppa coffee, a bag of M&M's and trudge on. LOL
