How do your write or draw on fondant or gumpaste? I've bought both the Wilton Food Writers and the KopyKake Food Writers and neither of them seem to give very good coverage. Am I supposed to let the fondant or gumpaste dry completely? How would I do that if the cake is already covered in fondant since it doesn't completely dry? My KopyKake pens actually seem kind of dry and I just got them.

I have the food writers too and i didn't like the results. Maybe it was me. The coverage was kind of like a magic marker that was drying out? I found I got better results by using the Wilton or Americolor gels with a new clean fine paintbrush.

i just picked up a set of "food doodler" pens, they work great. your pens might have been old/dry when you bought them

I painted the tile cake in my pictures using americolor gels thinned with a little orange extract and it worked just like I planned! Thinning it out helps you get even coverage, and using an orange or lemon extract (the highest alcohol content of all the extracts) helps it to dry faster without being sticky. I don't think you need to let the fondant dry completely first unless you're making individual pieces that will be dry.

Thanks for your replies. I'll have to try the color gels. Sounds like a good solution.
