Stack a two tier 8 inch round on top of a two tiered 9x13? I've never stacked and don't really know the requirements. I'm going to assume I probably need dowels but am unsure if a board is required between the round and the square.

will you be putting the round directly on top of the 9x13? if so, then it depends on how tall your 8" is if you will need any support...

yes I would use a support system for any cakes that are diffrent sizes or shapes

yes, I'd be putting the round directly on the 9x13 - I was going to do a two tiered 8" on top and was thinking of cutting the rectangle cake to be more square - so I guess to be safe I'll use dowels and cake boards!! Uh, oh...what if I can't find cake boards at my local store (I live in the boonies...) could I use cardboard?

If you can't find cake boards, use a piece of regular cardboard cut from a box but wrap it with freezer paper, foil, or even wax paper to prevent it from touching the cake. By all means use supports, too. When you say you want to stack a 2 tier cake on top, I assume you mean 2 layers and that would be too much weight without supports.

put a cake board in between the 2 sizes for support and use dowels.
