Hi. Does anyone sift the boxed cake mixes before mixing? I do most of the time and I like the outcome much better than not sifting. Also does anyone have trouble with the Domino powdered suagar in the box being really clumpy? I ran mine through the sifter the other day but it still wasn't right.
I also sift box mixes. I haven't try Dominos powdered sugar, but I used to use Bakers Chef from Sam's Club and it real lumpy. I find buying a store brand powdered sugar ( here the store is Jewels) or Crystal light is much finer and when sifted it makes the icing very smooth.
I haven't tried sifting box mixes yet but i hear it helps. being in alaska i don't get dominos, just C&H and i get it in 50 pound bags at costco so i always sift. i bought a 9 cup sifter (crank handle!) on sugarcraft.com because i am always sifting! LOL. sure makes it easier!
I always sift. Maybe it's just the climate here in NY, but box mixes always have huge lumps in them. Same thing I find with Dominos sugar in the 1 lb boxes. The 2# and larger bags of Dominos seem to have less lumps in them, but I sift anyway - there are always some in there! I use a large crank sifter that will fit 2# of powdered sugar; it only takes a few minutes but the results are worth it! Now don't get me started on granulated sugar - if i don't keep it in a plastic bag, it's like a brick!
I started to sift my box mixes, and I can tell you...there is a HUGE difference!! My cake mixed so much nicer- so smooth! It baked quicker too, and I have to tell you, to me, it just seemed like it tasted so much lighter!! I'm not a huge cake fan (I know...omg...gasp!!) but I did have a sliver of the last one, and there really IS a BIG difference! Just try it once, and you'll be hooked! It only takes a few seconds, but so worth the time!
hmmmm. i am going to have to try sifting the mix!
charb31.... too flippin' funny on the sigs!!!!! tell hubby we don't do igloos anymore but i can pitch him a tent in the back yard (it's 20 degrees and snowy right now) and he'll get the same effect LOL
