Quick Recap .....The Army Sent me to school for 3 months so that means no baking and I am going out of my mind good thing is that my hometown is about 2 hours away so I am going to fix my "addiction" this weekend by going to my moms and baking a cupcake bouquet.....So today my mom calls me and tells me that the county fair is coming at the end of Sept and I should do a cake and enter one of the categories. I check out the site online and sure enough they have a best decorated category where the cake can be a dummy. I am thinking that I can go home on the weekends and work on it until the fair but I am scared as $$$$ because I am a newbie. I have an idea in mind from a cake I saw on here of course but I want to wait to reveal until I PM the person and one ask for permission and two ask her to coach me because I am fairly new to this. My question is would you enter if you were a newbie? Also what ideas you would come up with? There is no particular scheme so I have free reign but once again CAN I DO THIS????????? icon_eek.gificon_eek.gificon_cry.gif

I say you never know what you can do until you try. What do you have to loose for entering? I think in the worst case you have gained experience. Your cakes are WAY better then mine, and all of my friends and family rave over mine (even when I think it was a total disaster). Go for it, and have fun!

Cake decoraters are their own worst critic. Your cakes are great for what you call a 'newbie'. The fair will be a challenge and something to look forward to on your weekends... it will be here before you notice and I'm sure the finished product will amaze us all. GO FOR IT!! You can do it!! thumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gif

I say go for it!

I am also new to the field, and I entered the local fair with a dummy cake. I entered the Beginners catagory.
Well, they bumped me up to Intermediate, and I got first place.

So you never know until you try!

I think you should do it. How fun! What's the worst that can happen? You don't win? At least you tried and got in some valuable practice. It sounds like a cool opportunity. I'd definitely sign up. If my dummy cake looked way crappy, I might withdraw my entry before delivering it to the fair icon_lol.gif , but I think it'd be fun to give it a go.

You never know until you try...I would certainly do it. I'd couldn't stand the thought of the little voice in my head saying-"you should have at LEAST tried"...if nothing else, it's really good practice! thumbs_up.gif

And how fun to have no category icon_razz.gif

Go for it, as my #2 son says "You can't hit the ball if you don't swing." So go for it and enter the competition. If you don't enter you will never know if you would have won and you will always wonder what if. Be sure to post your picture, and the best of luck.

What's the worse that can happen if you enter? They wont put you in front of a firing squad lol Go for it live dangerously after all we only go around once. Besides just think of the boost to your moral if you place and if it's just a dummy you dont have to worry about tastes as no one will eat it anyway. So gain some confidence as well as some experience and take the plunge.

ps let us know how you do Good Luck

I do think you have the talent, your cakes are very nice. Plus, the nice thing about fake cakes is you can take a little bit longer with them since you don't have to worry about the cake inside going stale. thumbs_up.gif And it seems to me that most use fair entries as a chance to challenge themselves and try new things. Why not?

Just thought I'd let you know, the Southern New Mexico State Fair also has a decorated cake category, judging is October 3. The guy in charge says they don't get too many entries and would always love more. You can find some basic info here: www.snmstatefair.com go to Information, Exhibitor Handbook, then to page 57 of that PDF file. I'm considering entering too, but $$ is tight at the moment, and I too worry about if I'm good enough yet. Plus DD's 1st birthday is that day, might overstretch myself! icon_lol.gif

I'd happily offer you space in my home, but I couldn't guarantee the cake's safely; I have a crafty, sneaky, cake demolishing 2 year old. icon_lol.gif http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-decorating-ftopict-452343-.html I just discovered she can climb up onto my kitchen counters WITHOUT using a chair for a boost. icon_eek.gif
