What Kind Of Reviews Have You Gotten...

I'm making my nephew a 'beach' cake this week and want to cover a good portion of it in brown sugar. I know it looks GREAT and really looks like sand... but do people like CRUNCHING into cake like that? I don't think that would be very pleasant, do you? I jus hate the idea of asking people to scrape off the sugar to eat it... and I know I don't like the look of crushed crackers as sand. There just isn't anything more realistic than brown sugar.
The dilemma of looking cool or tasting better....lol
Anyone do this type of this and NOT have people complain of crunchy sugar? I don't want to ruin the cake experience for others! LOL!!
I like to use crushed up vanilla wafers or any plain vanilla/sugar cookie. You can add a little brown sugar to this (and some cake sparkles to jazz it up a little if you like) to get a good sandy look. Tastes a little better than just brown sugar or graham crackers.
I made cupcakes for a Hawaiin Luah and used natural cane Turbinado sugar . It is more " sandy" in looks and texture than regular Brown sugar. It just has a soft crunch and no one complained, they loved it! I sprinkled it on top of cupcakes to look like sand, then added a little beach umbrella with gumpaste sandals. ![]()
I got the Sugar from WalMarts.
I've done a sand castle cake completely covered in brown sugar. No one complained, and they all liked it. ![]()
I use the same thing I use for cheesecake crusts... ground up graham crackers with melted butter and sugar. Pulse in the food processor. Works great - not too sweet, and not too "crunchy".
I've made sand using a combination of cinnamon graham crackers and beige sanding sugar. Nobody complained, and I think that the cinnamon grahams gave a more realistic looking sand than the honey grahams. (Then again, sand looks different everywhere.)
