Hi everyone,
I attempted my first FBCT for practice...the Cat in the Hat in my photos. How do I make the piping "lines" less noticable? Have a thinner BC when filling it in? Also, I trimmed it in white but I'm not sure if I'll do the cake in white. Is it okay if I trim in white and then do some kind of border around it when it's on the cake? Or would that look weird? Any other advice would be helpful...
Here is a thread that discusses how to get rid of the lines:

I used to have that problem and now I use squirrelly's recipe and it works great.
I recommend making the transfer the size of the top of the cake, so you can just do the background color whatever color you want - that way you won't have a raised picture in the middle of your cake.
If you make it fairly thick it should be okay, otherwise I would be afraid it would break when you went to put it on the cake. The biggest one I have done is 10X10. Hopefully someone else has some experience with that size.
You could do it that way. I did that once and it took a lot of smoothing, which made me nervous because I was so afraid of smearing the FBCT. But it did work (see my monkey baby shower cake in my photos).
Looks great. How did you like doing it? I really want to try this.
Yes, just the monkey and the tree are the FBCT. It took a lot of filling gaps, smoothing, and nearly giving up a couple of times, but it finally came out. If you look closely at the edges you can see a few places where the white BC smeared the black lines along the edge of the tree.
Good luck with yours. Can't wait to see a picture when you're done ![]()
When I do mine I usually let me icing build up when I'm piping. I don't pipe in lines but hold the tip in place and let the icing build up around the type.
When I get the piece finished I place it in the freezer for 20 or so mins then take it out and flip it over. With the wax paper over the top of it I rub my finger/nail to blend the lines together.

I did just that last night.. I am attempting a human face for a BCT.. So I thought.. I need this as smooth as can be.. So I did all the different colors little at a time.. I first did the outlining.. Then I would put a big squirt down the middle of my outline.. Placed a piece of wax paper and push down on it gently so that my icing would spread out to fit the outline. I continued to do so, and WOW I have almost no lines in my BCT.. Will post picture tonight..
