I have a cake due in September for my nephew. He wants a tornado cake with toys coming out of the tornado. My first thought was the wonder mold pan turned upside down. Too heavy to stand and not tip over?? I could run a dowel all the way through it. Anyone have any ideas for this one?? Thanks in advance.

You could do the dowel through the wonder pan - might have to mount the dowel with a screw/washer on bottom of cake board. icon_confused.gif Or, how about making a funnel out of gumpaste? It's light enough and then you could "fill" it with toys on skewers and/or cotton candy icon_smile.gif mmm....

what about making a round cake or a half sheet cake and then make a rice krispie tornado on top and you could have some toppled houses and such and have toy cows and cars and things coming out of the side of the tornado?

I did a sheet cake for a boy who is obsessed with tornados. It came out really cute. I did trees blowing and broken and a tornado with a house coming out of it. He loved it. I can e-mail you a picture if you would like. I do not know how to put pictures on here, but I can send you the picture from my snapfish account. Send me your e-mail and I will send it to you.

how bout a whimsical style one (just the one tier) and tint it black or graduating shades of blue with white swirls going around it and mini trucks and twigs sticking out

I think I like the idea of using gumpaste. I will have to give that a try. Thanks everyone, great ideas.

I would try a big gumpaste coil with wires sticking out of it with toys attached.
here is a rough pic that I did in paint so you can see what I mean.

Thanks for all the ideas. I made the tornado cake today. It turned out pretty good. I ended up making a funnel out of gumpaste and kind of twisting it around. If I ever make another tornado (ha ha) I will have to make it a little more steady. It feel over right after the pic was taken. I told them that tornado sometimes go sideways...ha ha The cake is in my photos.
