Hi, everyone:

I am considering buying myself a stand mixer, but I find the choices a bit overwhelming. I mostly bake cookies and cakes, and am considering learning how to decorate cakes and to bake bread. Years ago, I borrowed a friend's KitchenAid stand mixer (don't recall which model, but it had the bowl that goes up in, rather than the tilting head feature). I really enjoyed using it, as the hands-free feature made my life a lot easier at the time! My only complaint was, it seemed to "walk" across the counter a bit.

Anyway...I don't have a big budget, so much as I'd like to spring for something really special, I just can't. I'm a little leary of buying reconditioned appliances, also.

I don't need it for a food processor, as I already have one, plus a hand mixer.

Is it true that the more watts the motor, the better the appliance will perform, and perhaps not burn out?

I look forward to getting your opinions!

One word: E-Bay. Go there, type in a search for Stand Mixer and see what they come up with. You can get some really great deals. You can also research what some of the "online stores" have in their stock ... you should find lots of helpful info on each respective model the store sells.

I recently had to replace my KA (like the one you borrowed with the bowl that goes up & down) after about 14 years 'cuz I burned out the motor. It was a reconditioned model and I had no problems with it until the last day or two before it died.

I replaced with a used one from another lady in my state who had replaced hers only because she had re-done her kitchen and she now wanted white instead of the almond color she had! A real steal for $75! If it lasts even half as long as my previous model, it's more than worth the $$. As this is only the 2nd KA I have owned, and it's the same size motor, I can't address the larger motor = more power question, but if you believe in "Time the Tool Man Taylor", it should be that way. LOL

I just got the 6 quart KitchenAid 600 pro model for $284 on Amazon.com with free shipping (actually $309 with $25 off special). It's still on sale, just do a search for the model number KP26M1XNP. This is a really good deal, the 5 quart artesan is on sale at our local Macy's for $299!

I got my kitchen aide at Kohl's. It was on sale, and I used one of those 30% off coupons I'd gotten in the mail. After all the discounts, I paid $130 for a brand new one. It's the 4.5 quart one, but I don't make lots of big cakes, so it works fine for what I do.

Also if you have a Bed Bath & beyond, you can get 20% off with the coupons they send all the time. If you need one, pm me--I have a bunch! Our stores take expired ones too. KAs are great! And so is their customer service imo.

I bought the KA 6 quart and LOVE IT! I used my sisters before I got my own and hers was smaller with the head that tilted and I, personally, like mine much better. I'm rather surprised that the one you had used moved across the counter, mine goes nowhere! Actually there are times when I go to move it and am still surprised by how sturdy it is.

Definitely Kitchen Aide, they are a little more pricey but consider it an investment. They last forever!

KitchenAid - I know it is a larger investment and you said you have a small budget. But it is worth saving for. You'll have it for years, will totally love it.

Funny aside ... I was with a group of music boosters over the weekend, making apple dumplings for our fall fundraiser. We were discussing the merits of our KA mixers and someone suggested going to the local Salvation Army store ... she has a friend who has 4 from there, all in perfectly good condition, and never paid more than about $15 for one!

Although this person has odd colors (avocado, yellow, gray...), who really cares? For $15, I'd be happy to take one that is chartreuse! For $15, I'd take ANY color!!! In fact, I might just go and see if I can buy another one!!! LOL!
