I am attempting to make a tiered cake for my daughters first bday party this saturday but have never covered with fondant. I have a couple of questions. What does "crumb" coat mean, and How thick should the fondant be rolled out to cover a cake?
Thank you.! Just heard the oven beep. gotta run ![]()

"Crumb Coat" is a thin layer of your icing, usually buttercream, under the fondant layer. Some people ice the cake "normally" but I use a thinner layer for crumb coating - just enough for the fondant to adhere to.
Which type of fondant are you using? I roll mine out probably a bit thicker than most people do - I think usually about 1/4".
There's a great tutorial on atecousa.net for using fondant on a cake.
Good luck with your cake!
