I am just starting to do wedding cakes and am wondering about pricing. I called Walmart and Kroger, they price starting at 1.22 and 1.66 a serving. My question is should I go higher? I can not do them as cheap and I have a better cake ( I hate their cakes!). Just wanting to get your take on this.

you should compare you pricing to bakeries in your area, not supermarkets. Nobody can beat a supermarket price. They deal in mass quantities. The bakeries do, too, to an extent, but they're pricing will be much more in line with what you would be able to afford to do. Of course your cakes are better, so you SHOULD charge more. If someone wants a cheap cake, they're going to the market. If someone wants a quality cake, they'll come to you.

Thats just it, there is not ONE bakery here!! Thats my goal to eventally open up a shop in town. There is really no one to compare to . There are a few people here that do cakes, but not many. That is what got me started soing them, for my kids.

Then I guess you are blazing a trail!!! How exciting for you. Do you think you can do them for $2.00, $2.25, $2.50? If you are offering something that people cannot get elsewhere and there is a demand, then you can charge whatever you want. I would start around $2.00 or $2.25 and as the demand increases, I'd increase my prices.

Blazing a trail is right!!!! I'm betting they dont' do fondant, carved, topsy-turvy, they don't custom design a cake to match invitations or dress material swatches.

You're now the leader of the pack! You are the one setting the standard and raising the bar!

Thanks so much for your encouragement!!! I really appreciate it. I think I will start out about 2.00 and go up when the demand increases. I love doing this and hope it just gets bigger.
