A couple of days ago I made the baby buggy hood for my cake this weekend. I put shortening on part of a half ball pan, then spread royal icing on it, then put a basketweave on top. It broke into lots of pieces this morning when I tried to take it off. What did I do wrong? Any suggestions on what I might do instead
eek!

I think the shortening might have broken down the royal. Maybe you could wrap the pan in plastic wrap or parchment first and it would peel off? Or you could use gumpaste.

Another suggestion, if it doesn't have to be edible, someone on here uses a funnel which she cuts the end off then cuts in half. It would depend on the size you need and if it needs to be edible. I agree that the shortening probably didn't work. I would try the plastic wrap or even pieces of wax paper taped togetherto cover the bowl if you w3anted to retry the royal. Good Luck and let us know what worked.

I've always used pastillage for this sort of thing because it is so strong. You can still do a basketweave on top of the pastillage base once it is dry. Good luck.

I use the wilton ovals for the base of the basinette, and then I take one half of the sports ball pan, and cut that in half and trim it just a little - it fits perfectly as the hood for the 7" ovals - makes an adorable basinette.....and it can be cut and served too!
