I was surfing around and found stuff about Tootsie Roll roses and then about Starburst roses. I ran to Walmart and wanted to get flavored Tootsie Rolls but since they didn't have any I got some Starburst. I couldn't believe how easy it was to make them!! This rose took me 7 Starburst.. Now I just need to work on how to get it to open up a little...(This is also after I dropped it on the floor and the one leaf chipped off of the top a little bit..
)
sorry I was having trouble... I've always read the forum but never used it myself!
I love it!! It turned out great!
Can you tell us how you did it?
It's basically the same idea as a BC rose, just making it with Starburst instead...
I microwaved the starburst for about 15 seconds until they were soft.
Then I took one and a half starburts and made the base to be pretty much the same shape as a Hershey's Kiss.
Then I took the remaining half and pressed it into a thin circle to make the middle and wrapped it around the base in a tight circle (to make the center bud part).
Then divide the remaining Starburts into 3 ( I divided them by 2 but had way too much extra candy on the bottom) and roll each piece into a ball.
Then you just press them into thin circles and place them onto the base (keeping in mind the same method that you use when making BC roses).
It would probably look better if you followed the same pattern as a BC rose too (3 petals for the first layer, 5 for the next, and 7 for the last).
Thanks so much for the info!! ![]()
I wasn't sure what needed to be done with the starburst or how long it needed to be melted for.
Can't wait to try this, never thought of using starburst. ![]()

OOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHH, the possibilities!!!!!!
no no no I didn't pipe it!!.. When I was saying to keep in mind the same idea as with the BC roses, I meant like the same layout and shapes...
That is just gorgeous! This site is too dangerous! Something else to try! I never ever touched fondant before ocming here and now I am looking for excuses to make mmf--lol.

They are gorgeous and such a wonderful idea. I am off to Wally world at lunch today!!! I cannot wait to try these!
I love making these, but Tootsie Roll roses are fun, too! Can't wait for the WHITE TR to come out for Christmas!
The kids ask for these all the time, and are starting to make them. I do mine on a sucker (Dum-Dum, as they are small). Tear off a piece of TR or Starburst, smash it with your fingers to form a petal. Wrap the petal around the sucker or a round glob of candy. Smash, wrap, repeat with more candy with a middle petal to cover glob or sucker, then 3, then 5, and finally 7 petals. I try to open each petal a bit by thinning the petals at the top edge when I put them together, then bending them up or out or whatever they need to look right.
If you make them with suckers, you can make a bouquet with them by adding a block of foam (about 1-2 inches thick) in the top of a vase or basket. Kinda like a cookie bouquet, but even sweeter! Also, no reason you couldn't open quite a few, micro 10 sec, knead into a ball, then color like fondant. They would be great for black roses, as they are dark enough to need little color. STOCK UP on the white (vanilla) Tootsie Rolls this winter! Can't find them any other time, and they would be easiest to color for spring. Last forever, too!
I find this much easier than gumpaste or fondant, and they harden quickly when you are done, and still VERY edible and tasty! Just wash those hands first!
Also, I have made giant ones on BlowPops that were appx 4" dia. and they held up quite well after they set. Remember that bigger center needs bigger petals, resulting in a big difference in rose sizes!
No reason these can't be made on candy sticks, as well.
This is actually an easy gift for kids to do for christmas! Cheap, too!
those roses are gorgeous.....I too am guilty of making roses out of anything I can get my hands on LOL I've made them out of juju fruit thingies and out of some gummy coins too! Anything that's plyable pretty much you can make them out of. At christmas my kids and I always make those ornaments out of dough you know the salt water and flour stuff. Well last year was the first year I figured out how to make roses (for the flower pot cake) and so as you probably guessed I made tons of roses out of that salt dough and they are gorgeous..beautiful white roses....I dried them out in the oven for several hours and then when they cooled I brushed glue on them and doused them in glitter.....they look like snow covered icicle roses.......they're gorgeous on our Christmas tree every asked where we got them because they are so striking on the dark green of the christmas tree!! I also made ones covered in light blue glitter for my mom's tree (she decorates the whole thing in lt. and dark blues it's gorgeous)
the exact recipe I have is packed up at the moment.....we're moving out of our house in 3 weeks! But this one is basically the same......the only difference is my recipe had me disolve the salt in the hot water first then add the veg. oil then the flour. Same basic recipe though....it makes a very nice and smooth pure white dough. Then I just bake them on 200 degrees on a cookie sheet........turning them every so often....for several hours depending on the thickness.....we make tons of stuff out of this......we have our childrens hand (outlined hand on paper and used as a template to cut out the dough) hanging on our tree, then I took a round cookie cutter and cut a hole in the center of the hand and put a photo of that child and covered the back with felt that had adhesive back on it......makes really nice keepsakes for grandparents too. It's fun even now with my 7 yr. old to see his little hand from when he was 8 months old hanging on the tree!
