I need help in a big way. My mother was an awesome baker who had a little shop, and was teaching me everything she knew. I am pretty good with the easy stuff (cookies, candies, etc.), but we never made it to fancy schmancy cake decorating. She just passed away, and I need to know the best way to learn. This site is great, and I was thinking of taking a class, but with so many classes out there, it is hard to choose. I still have to work during the day until I learn enough to reopen the shop, so a full time school is out. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.
What am I doing?!?
I'd suggest starting with the Wilton courses at your local Michael's or Hobby Lobby. They are inexpensive, at night, and will teach you the basics to get started. Then you can probably find more advanced courses in your area if you think you need them.
Ditto on the Wilton classes. I learned most of my skills from grandmothers and by practice. I was surprised to see so many tutorials on this website as well. I find that the best way for me to learn is to practice although I know that eats up time and resources.
I'm sorry to hear about your mother. She sounds like a special person to pass those skills on to you. Best of luck in getting your shop reopened.
I would try taking a wilton class try Michaels, or any craft store. Just to get your started a lot of it is when you start getting the basics down you will be good to go. You can decide if you want basics or start getting more detail cakes.
Look at the "aticles" section on the top of the page. LOTS of ideas and help to tutorials to get you started.
And just ask a question here and you will get help.
For coloring for your frosting I would go with Americolor after you get started and decide you want to contiue cake decorating. Americolor does not bleed into the frosting and you do not have to use as much compared to wilton brand. then you start adding more pans and tools as you go along.
I can also try Toba Garret cake decorating book, it is sold out here but you can try cooking.com they have it for a good price $39. You will lots of help from that book.
