I am doing a cake next weekend for my dh's two nieces. they want mermaids. well I have only done one doll cake and I just used that teen doll pick and it looks nothing like a mermaid so I went out looking to see if I could find some mermaid dolls and couldn't find any so I bought this pack of really cheap barbie knock offs cause one of them had red hair and I was thinking maybe I could just take the head off and use it on the doll pick but I can't get the head off the doll pick. so can anyone here give me any advise as to what to do?

In one of the past Wilton Yearbooks, sorry I really don't remember what year it was, they had a Mermaid using the wondermold and doll cake. They used the wondermold and instead of making it a dress they made it a big rock. They put the doll pick in the top and then used fondant (I think) to make the mermaid tail down the front of the 'rock'.

Maybe someone else knows what cake I am talking about and can help with a picture or what year it was in.

You can use the dolls in place of the doll picks. You will just need to put another layer of cake under the wondermold to make it tall enough.

" You can use the dolls in place of the doll picks"

ahhh see I should have been more specific cause this is what I wanted to know icon_lol.gif

since i can't switch the heads how do I use the whole doll. do I need to wrap it in anything or do I just shove it in?
I will be using the wondermold with an additional cake under that.

You can wrap some plastic wrap around the legs. Just slowly press the feet and legs into the cake.

Just to let you know it my experience, the dolls are too tall for the wondermold alone, so I have to stick a 9" underneath the wondermold if I am using real dolls. HTH!
