I am in big trouble. I have a cake to make for Friday and the child has peanut allergies. She warned me of duncan hines mixes but named a couple that would be ok. I checked my ingredients for making the cake and nothing says peanut anything. BUT today I checked the wilton candy melts and they say nothing about peanut but I have melts also from AC moore buy a different company and they say peanut. Also, the wilton icing colors mention nothing about peanut allergies to.

If anyone can clear this up for me I would greatly appreciate it. Also then if there are any ideas on how I can go abouts making a SPONGEBOB cake really nice then?

Can you do an edible image of Spongebob? This should be okay. I would check the edible image list as well. You could also visit a party store and they have great Spongebob "stuff" you could decorate a cake with.

hmm... i tried doing a search for you, but was unable to find anything regarding the Wilton products and their status as peanut free (they are certified kosher, however!! :S)
If I were you, I'd contact Wilton directly and confirm with them that their products are peanut free. Generally if it does not have the standard "may contain nuts" disclaimer, it's okay, but you never know and it's not a risk that you want to take!
Hope you can get the answers you need.
Cheers!

These are things you need to think about:

If it says nothing about nuts in Wilton, I would take it to be OK.

HOWEVER, if there is ANYTHING you have used in your kitchen with nuts recently, then double wash it and/or don't use that ingredient and buy a new one. Like, if you chopped nuts in your food processor, QUADRUPLE wash that unit or don't use it at all because ANY oils can be too much.

If you are using a jam filling, make sure a knife or spoon that has been anywhere near nutella or peanut butter or the like has never touched it.

If your cake pan has had anything with the peanuts/nuts in it, then quadruple scrub it for same reasons...

Not trying to scare you, just helping you.

I just posted this topic last night, just got a response from Wilton...

Hi Michelle,

Thank you for visiting our website.

Please be aware, the following information regarding Food Allergens, Food Sensitizers, or Food specifications is to the best of our knowledge believed to be accurate.

Our candy melts do not have any peanuts or tree nuts in them, but are produced in a facility with other products that may contain these allergens. We do not have specific line information.

Sincerely,

Rosemary

Thank you all for the fast replies. While everyone was responding, I called Wilton and they did say just as they responded to Michelle. I then called the childs mom to voice my concerns. She said the child has had cake before w/ colored icings. She doesn't plan on having him eat much of the cake anyway and that I should go ahead w/ all my orginal plans (candy melts and colored icing). I will again stress it all to her when she receives the cake about what I was told from Wilton.

Thanks for all the extra caution warnings as well. I am definitely going to pass on future peanut allergy cakes and it is way to stressful for someone who has never had to deal w/ food allergies and my cakes are not that good and not worth the risks on my part.

I agree with you. If you are not comfortable with dealing with the allergy then you should just tell the person and pass. I have a son who is peanut/nut allergic and to someone who does not deal with this directly there are things you just would not think about concerning cross- contamination. Another persons life is just not worth risking .

As for the spongebob cake, have you considered doing a cupcake cake? There are some really cute ones on here and spongebob is the perfect shape for one. Good Luck!
