why do I take on projects I KNOW I can't do??

I assembled this air traffic control tower and had it so poorly doweled it was the leaning tower of pisa. so i disassembled and reassembled taking better dowel measurements. it was straight as an arrow for about 20 minutes. then it started to lean....it wasnt even leaning that bad i thought just the icing was bulging but then i heard the dreaded noise...

SPLAT!!!

soooo this cake is due at 1pm tomorrow lol....how does grocery store sheet cake sound to everyone???

so i felt guilty not giving her any cake at all...so i made a sheet cake for her. this one is stable as concrete icon_lol.gif

i put way too much grass tip on it...cuz i used a wilton color spray can on it and didnt shake it up enough beforehand and it was spotty green dye blotches everywhere. i'm thinking about scraping a line of grass off to make a plane runway....20 min left to figure it out lol

Why not make (get) a batch of cupcakes to redo the tower on the sheet cake? Realize I'm typing this too late now - but maybe next time?

Nice save with the sheet cake! Sorry about the disaster, but at least it didn't happen in your car on the delivery. Gotta find a blessing in there somewhere.

thanks, guys! i did end up adding a runway and antennas to the roof to fancy it up a bit, it looked plain to me. i had saved my little coiled fondant planes from the previous cake to stick into the new cake but they melted in the car during delivery... icon_sad.gif so the cake had no planes just a random runway hahaha

its a good thing i have sweet coworkers, the recipient said not to worry and it was very cute

I'm nervously giggling with tears in my eyes! After my nightmare of Saturday ('collapsing cake') it's too soon for me not to weep with sympathy for you - but it's darn good to know others suffer these disasters (and you're braver than me - taking a picture - definitely one for the memory album, DISTANT memory icon_wink.gif )

Just curious, did you use straws for your supports? Did you do a central dowel?

I had a little of everything in that cake, but none of the right stuff. i was a little creative with my doweling lol.

i started off with a cake board and poked 3 rose nails through the bottom of the board so i had 3 nails sticking up from the bottom of my board. i then put straws on top of each nail that were the perfect width so the bottom straws were pretty sturdy. that held together the bottom 2 layers (the only survivors).

the next 2 layers were on top of another cake board and had more straws , and then i put a kabob stick and later a 2nd stick through all 4 of those layers. the top layer was on top of a wilton separator plate.

can you tell i have no clue how to dowel tall cakes??? lol

if i could do it over i would have used real plastic hidden dowels and i would have used a minimum of 4 (3 was too few) please do tell me how crazy i am and how to do better next time!!

Well too bad all of your hard work didnt pay off. I think probably your creative dowelling was your demise! Better luck next time!
