I have read in here that kool-aid can be added to icing to deepen a color. I believe the posts only dealt with red though. I need bright orange for a cake this weekend and remembered about the kool-aid. Does anyone know if orange kool-aid will work? Will it leave a bitter taste? And how much should I use in about 3cups icing? Thanks for any suggestions!

For read I've heard to use Black Cherry, and it is suppose to make a deep red. But it also flavors the icing taste like the cherry kool aid.

You could use the orange. It will be an orange, but I'm not sure it will be a bright orange as I haven't made orange kool aid in a long time.

I would try adding some red to my orange. I have tried the kool-aid and the kids wouldn't even eat it. I made a deep orange over the weekend and just added a little red and flourescent yellow. Just add and let it sit. Mine came out perfect. I also used Americolor, so that has alot to do with it also. Good luck

I've used red kool aid once. It was so sour that everyone picked it off, even the kids. Luckily I only used it on a few small areas. It gave a nice red, but was VERY sour. Not sure about the orange.

try using the pre sweeten koolaid & not the kind you have to add sugar to (or half & half of the koolaids) or like others have said, i've heard americolors is good

I also found that kool aid made the frosting sour. I bought some kool aid that has sugar substitute in it to try ... but I haven't done it yet. If I were you, I'd just add more orange or some red coloring to deepen your orange. Safest bet!

Thanks for your input guys! I think I'll go with the adding some red and maybe yellow. Glad I asked before doing the kool-aid icon_biggrin.gif .

I once used a packet of the sweet stuff you add to a bottle of water to turn it into a kool aid type drink. It made it super sweet, so I then added some unsweetened kool aid and the color came out perfect. Was still a little sweet, but the color was great. The one I used was Wylers, but Crystal Light also makes them.

You might experiment w/ just a pinch. I'd think even if you used the unsweetened kool-aid w/ your BC, it wouldn't be sour because the sugar from the BC would make up for that. Unless you used lots of K.A. to just a little BC.
