Hi,
I am a person who wants to start decorating cakes. I love baking and I know that this is something that I want to do. I guess I want to know what supplies would you suggest. I was also going to take the Wilton class at Michaels craft store but would being self taught be okay too. Any help for a newbie would be greatly appreciated icon_biggrin.gif

you know, I am new to cake decorating too. I haven't taken any classes. Although it wouldn't hurt to do so. My mom used to decorate cakes and isn't able to as much due to arthritis. But I learned just by looking at her do them for all her grandchildren parties and friends and neighbors. I just started decorating about a year ago based on what I had learned from my mom and lots of practice. My skills are very basic still but I'm not afraid to try anything new. I try to read a lot on different techniques and practice them. The only thing I can tell you is to not be afraid and start practicing. Soon you will be on your way to beautiful cakes. I bought the Wilton decorating kit for the 1st course and that helped even though I didn't take the class. Hope that helps

I loved the Wilton class 1 and would suggest taking it. I think some flowers are very difficult to learn by one's self. You'll definitely need some decorating bags and some tips--the most basic ones being a petal tip, a star tip, and a circle tip. I'd suggest some couplers for your bags as well although you can technically get by without it. You'll need an offset spatula for icing. That's probably your minimum starting list. I'm sure others will remember what I've forgotten.

I'm a newbie too. I took the Wilton I course at Michael's and really enjoyed it. I opted not to take anymore classes, though, and really I think that's ok. It all comes with practice practice practice. The first class was good, though, and lots of fun. Just keep practicing and trying new things. Cake decorating is a GREAT hobby if you just enjoy doing it. Good luck!

Oh yeah...I forgot to say that the Wilton starter kit they have at Michaels is great to start out with (the red one, not the blue one), and your instructer can tell you what else you might need. The Wilton kit comes in a nice little "tackle box" and you'll be able to add to it.

I would say take Wilton 1, the class is cheap enough. The kit and the start up supplies they suggest can add up, but what they recommend is what you will need for the basics anyway. Get lots of Micheals coupons icon_lol.gif I thought the class was fun and definitely worth it.

First of all- Congrats on finding this great new hobby!!!

I started decorating about this time last year and I have just fell in love with all things CAKE!!! (Cookies too) I tried several times to take the classes, but they kept getting canceled at my Michaels. =( So in the end I just bougt a book and figured it out myself.

I found that I personally really love working with fondant. (I make MMF) Buttercream makes me nervous, and I am not nearly as confident with it. I have 2 friends that have taken the Wilton courses though and really loved them!

So, good luck! Have fun. If you like you can take a look at my pictures and see what you can learn from Cake Central in less than a year! Honestly, when people ask where I learned I say CC and the food Network! Yay CC!

You definately need to practice, practice, practice and taking a Wilton class will help you out alot. As for what you'll need, I agree with one of the replies..pick up the Wilton starter kit and go from there.....

Good luck.
