Okay, I've read several threads about the best way to stick ribbon on cakes, but I'm about to do it for the first time on a wedding cake and suddenly I'm panicking. Its grograin ribbon on crusted buttercream, so what do you think is best--piping gel, royal icing, buttercream, pins???
Thanks so much!!!!

Pins can be very pretty but you need to make sure the person cutting knows they are there. Piping gel has become my new duct tape! icon_lol.gif I use it for everything lately so I'd probably use that.

Do you have something on the back of the ribbon to prevent the bc from spotting the ribbon or changing it's color? You can attach clear contact paper to the back. The last cake I did I pre-greased the ribbon to prevent bleeding but sometimes it will change the color of the ribbon

I don't know what you mean by grograin ribbon but here's what I did last weekends wedding cake.

Lined the back of my ribbon with waxed paper. Did this by using double sided tape to attach the waxed to the ribbon then trimmed the waxed to hide behind the ribbon. I attached it with piping gel applied in a zig-zag pattern along the back-side. Use enough to make it good and sticky but not so much so that it squishes out past the ribbon. If you let it dry a minute or two before pressing against cake, it will become a bit tacky even. Once the ribbon was on, I inserted a pearl ended hat pin to further secure it. Worked beautifully. I was AT the wedding and it held perfectly from 2:00 p.m.till cake cutting time.

grosgrain is just a type of ribbon.

quickest thing to do, take a really thin amount of crisco and grease the back of the ribbon. Then any color the ribbon would change (usually a little darker) it will all change together and not have any spots - wait a few minutes then put the ribbon on the cake. It should stick just fine. This is what I've done. If it didn't stick in a certain spot, I used a little buttercream - just a little so no bumps!!

Good luck - and post a pic!

just put it on, start in the back and there shoudn't be any problem especially with the buttercream crusted. I've never had the ribbon change color, this is just my experience though. I always use buttercream to attach, only a little dot should suffice.
