Hi All,

I'm looking for ideas on how to do a checkered cake w/out having to buy this set. I have one at home and i love it. but my friend is trying to find a way to do this cake w/out buying it. any tips? suggestions? I see it's popular, it's been sold out at the store here.

thanks!

I picked up that set at Michaels and used my 1/2 off coupon. I paid round $7 for it. As soon as I used it once, I found the insert at a thrift store. I didn't need the cake pans the set came with. Since I used them, and lost the receipt I can't take it back. I'd be willing to part with the set I have...

I have seen (in a book) it done with square cakes. Just make two 9" square chocolate, one 9" square yellow cake. After they have cooled, slice them into strips, and assemble them. Alternate strips like a checkerboard, using icing as "glue" to hold them together.
I have never tried this method, as I have the set...but it seems like it would work.
FYI...I have seen the checkerboard pan set at Wal-Mart (on the bakeware isle, not in the Wilton section) for only $8.88. I bought mine at Michaels for $14.99!! Should have checked there first!!!!
Good luck! icon_smile.gif

I made that halloween cake (candy corn) for my daughter's birthday last week. It was so easy, she saw it in a book last year and wanted it but we couldn't find the cake pan. I have it in my cake pictures.

It looks great!! i'm going to try making it too. I wonder how in the world they get theirs to look so even and perfect?! i've done a checkered cake before (in my photos), it looked ok but not perfect.
