[B]How To Keep My Royal Icing From Being Sooooo>>>
Decorating By Ladivacrj Updated 24 Oct 2006 , 4:15pm by MissBaritone
I am having a few problems with my royal icing. I need the pieces I'm working to dry but not so hard.
I thought of adding a little Karo syrup to it but not sure it would dry at all at that rate.
Any help you all have would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I have heard of people adding butter to royal.....haven't ever tried it myself though!! Have you thought about using color flow?? From what I understand it's not as hard as royal! What are you doing with it???

Here is a recipe that gets rave reviews from people on here haven't tried it myself......but evidentally it doesn't get super hard like royal.......if you're decorating cookies that's fine.......but if you're trying to make stuff that you want to stand up you're not going to achieve that with this recipe
Royal icing does dry quite hard and brittle (and very fragile!) It's just the nature of the stuff.....
If you need it to dry faster, set a fan to blow on your royal items or set the tray in the oven with just the light on, no heat. I've also heard of others using food dehydrators to dry their royal and gumpaste items.
I am trying to make some pieces that can stand alone.
I love Alice's icing, it is wonderful and the only thing I will ever use for my cookies again.
I think I am going to have to get my technique down with this royal situation, it may be the only way I can achieve what I need.
Thanks

Color flow will dry much harder than royal icing, and it is what is instructed to use in the Wilton classes for pieces that need to be "harder". It is no different to make from regular royal icing, the difference is the powder you use in the mixture. I used it to make the baby face (carriage cake in my pictures). You can't really tell is not royal, and it was very sturdy.
I'm afraid glycerine will stop it drying hard enough. I usually make around 3 times the number of pieces I need to ensure I have enough.
