Just wondering if anyone has taken any of the cake decorating courses that Michaels Craft store offers? I was thinking of trying out their beginner course and was looking for some feedback from someone who has taken it.

Thanks!

I took all of my classes at Michaels and then took special classes at a local cake supply/bakery for all those little details. Luckily, I was the only student in all three classes, so I got private lessons. So, I got a little more attention and my instructor was great!

I've only taken the first Wilton Course, but I do plan to take the other two!!! It is a great basis for beginning cake decorators; icing techniques, roses, etc., I truly recommend this class for those that are just starting out, like me!!!!

I took the first class and I can't believe what I learned. Most importantly, I learned that having the right tools makes a big difference. I want to take the other two classes as well, but in all the stores close to me that offer courses (Michael's (2 locations) and AC Moore, ALL of them start at 6:30 pm. In the DC area, people just don't get HOME until 6-7 pm, so my DH can't relieve me in time. He doesn't get home until about 7 pm and then I would need to drive a minimum of 15 minutes. Why they don't stagger the times, I don't know! Grrr...

So, I'm wanting to take all the classes, but can't find the time. In my pictures, I think you can clearly tell which ones were before classes and which after course one.

I took all three at Michael's, loved it! My instructor was wonderful though, I think what you learn comes from what you put into it and who teaches you. She taught us a lot of "extras" that Wilton does not teach so it really depends on your instructor. Have fun!

Hi,
My daughter and I took all (3) sessions of the Wilton classes at Michael's. We both just loved it and will be taking gumpaste classes (hopefully) after the first of the year. Rumor has it they will be offering it then. I highly recommend the classes if you like cake decorating. I learned a great deal from our instructor. Good luck.

I, too, took all 3 courses at Michael's. I loved them!! The instructor really does make the difference. My Micheal's had two different instructors that taught the classes, and about 1/2 the ladies in my course 2 classes had taken the other instructor for course 1 and didn't like it/her. See if you can observe 5 or 10 minutes of a class and see if you think you will like the instructor. Class 2 or 3 of course 1 is a good class to observe for a few minutes if they will let you.

I can't wait for the gumpaste class that is supposed to be offered after the first of the year!!!

I teach the Wilton classes at Hobby Lobby, all the classes are the taught with the same book. I think it depends on the teacher you get, if you really get alot out of the class. I like Michaels special for Nov. is 1/2 off ($12.50 total price) and I don't have my students by the kit until the 2rd class because you really don't need until then just in case cake decorating isn't for them ( I've actually never had anyone not come back in the almost 2 years I've been teaching. I also show my students my brag book the 1st night of class so they can decide for their self if I even know want I'm doing.

Am finishing up course II at Michaels. You get what you put into it.
Last night we had to make 8 flowers in course II for the third class out of 4 and the class was too big, no room, and no one had all the many supplies that we should have been told to bring. I came home very frustrated knowing that it takes a week for the flowers to dry so I had to come home and make them or they wouldn't be dry for the next week. Couldn't do that but after everyone left this morning for school, etc, I got everything out and kicked out 30 flowers (for the final cake) in no time. So if you're checking into a class, find out how many people are in the class also. Makes a difference when there is one on one.
Also, it is very costly with supplies if you don't have them in case money is a factor for you. Course I deals with a lot of cakes, while Course II is only one cake. I have enjoyed it as a night out, but still will say that this site has taught me so much more than the classes, although the classes are a hands on. Good luck.

I took all 3 and loved it. I learned so much. I made my son's birthday cake in February - my first try at cake decorating and I had thought it was good. Once I took the class and learned about icing consistencies and got the right tools, I know it could have been so much better. I started the classes knowing nothing, and I get better with each cake I do!

I took all 3 courses at Michael's and I highly recommend that you do too. They are always running specials on classes and kits. My course 1 I paid $25 for the class and .01 for the kit. My 2nd & 3rd course were 1/2 off - $5 coupon the instructor gave me for taking previous courses so they cost me $7.50. If you use the 40% off coupon in the Sunday paper for your kits/supplies you will save $ there too.

But you do need to check out the instructor first. Some instructors became instructors right after taking Course 3 and they are not as good as an instructor that has been doing it for many years.

Good luck and have fun!

I'm finishing up Course III and I love it. I like the Michaels atmosphere and I love my Wilton instructor. However, I'm also lucky because the class size has been small through all three classes and my instructor is very experienced and a really good teacher (she's a retired school teacher). Our Michaels has two instructors and from what I can tell / heard I lucked out and got the better of the two. She gives us alot of tips and ideas that we probably never would have thought of and is honest about what we need and what we don't. She has saved us a lot of money, I'm sure! The cost of taking the Wilton classes can be high once you've paid for the class, class kit, and the supplies you need. But, I buy everything using coupons(this close to Christmas Michaels has one every week and I use the Hobby Lobby one there too, since they accept competitors coupons) so, in all, I'm able to get 40% off of three different items a week, and it helps! All in all, even after the cost involved and the hour long drive there and another hour back home, I defintely recommend the Wilton classes at Michaels.

I took classes I and II, and again, it depends on the instructor. I had a different instructor for II, but less people in the class. I learned so much since I'm such a newbie at this and I absolutely love it! I can't wait until I do III.

Hi
I took course 1-2 & 3 and loved it. I did repeat class 2 though as I felt I needed it to get the flowers down pat. I also took the course called Elegant Fondant and loved that. The gumpaste class is starting up in November and then again after the new year and I can't wait. Can't get enough courses in; I wish they had more to offer.
