Hi everyone,

I am going to do a dummy cake to be displayed near glass doors & windows and I wanted to do something really girly pink and mauve type colours but I have read on here before (and had noticed it myself previously with pink) that these colours tend to fade and discolour quite quickly when exposed to UV light. The dummy would be covered in fondant, should I just give up on the idea of using those colours?

If I airbrushed it instead of tinting the fondant would that be any better?

Does anyone have and info or tips on this type of thing that they would be willing to share?

thanks icon_smile.gif

I don't think airbrushing will fix the problem of the colors fading. However, would it be possible to occasional "touch-up" the colors by airbrushing back to original colors?

(Not sure if this would work, but perhaps others will have further suggestions!!)

I wonder if you put some type of shellac on the cake if that would help protect it???/

Thanks for your suggestions icon_smile.gif

Would shellac give it a shiny finish? I really want the cake to look like it would if they were to order one from me (which wouldn't be shiny).

I guess the re-airbrushing would work the only thing would be if I have put decorations over the airbrushing (piping/flowers etc) how to re-do it with out messing it up.(I still have my airbrushing training wheels on icon_wink.gif )

I might just have to pick a different colour scheme unless anyone else has any other ideas?

Thanks again

Please tell us, what features are you decorating in these colours, and what will they be made of?

I am still figuring that out in my head but I was thinking pink cake with purple accents. It would all be fondant.

Alternately, you could allow the fondant on the dummy to dry completely, then airbrush it with acrylic paint. You would probably have to hand paint any decorations.

Do you mean acrylic paint like artists use? If I used that in my airbrush I wouldn't be able to use it with food colouring again would I? don't you have to keep the air-brush for food safe stuff only?

Yes, I mean the stuff in the bottles that they sell in craft stores, not the tube stuff.

And yes, you would have to use a separate airbrush. I don't know about there in OZ, but here at my local AC Moore, I picked up a crafter's airbrush with propellant canister for around $30. Look around and see if you can find a deal like that.

thanks everyone for your suggestions icon_smile.gif I think I will try looking for the matt clear spray paint as I haven't seen any cheap airbrushes around.

Thanks again for all your help
