I've been looking at the beautiful photos everyone here at cc has posted & I've noticed that there are a lot of different colored foils that have been used to cover cake boards. I shop at Michael's for most of my cake supplies & the one I shop at only has the silver or gold Fanci-foil. I was wondering if there was someplace online that sells different colored foils, or is everyone using something other that cake foils.

You can always try wrapping paper. Great for different occasions.

Hey, that's a good idea! Do you know if there are certain types I should use or not use? Do you think there would be a chance of it fading becausing of the icing?

I use different wrapping paper covered with clear contact paper. The contact paper is grease-proof so it doesn't soak up the buttercream.

I use either the contact-covered wrapping paper, or florist foil.

Ok, first of all prettycake I have to say THAT CAKE IS GEORGEOUS!!! WOW!!! I'm not worthy, I'm not worthy!!! LOL!! tmriga mentioned florist foil too. What exactly is florist foil & where would I find it? The foil you used under your cake is very pretty. I would love to have something like that to use.

I never thought about looking in the floral dept. for anything. I'm always hanging out in the cake section. I guess I should browse around the store a little more!! I'll have to look for some the next time I'm in there. Thanks!

Isn't florist foil really really thin? Do you also cover that with clear contact paper?

The florist foil I use isn't thin at all. It is thicker than regular aluminum foil. And I don't cover mine with contact paper. Don't know about anyone else.

Some florist foil is very thin and rips easily. I buy the florist foil that is lined with plastic on the inside. It is very sturdy and won't rip when you're wrapping the board. If the name of the foil has the word "Poly" in it, then it's the thicker, sturdier kind. It comes in all sorts of colors. Here's a great website where you can get every color in the rainbow (and they have wonderful customer service, to boot!!): http://www.countrykitchensa.com/catalog/mini.aspx?T=1&SubCatId=100

I used wrapping paper covered in clear Contact paper also. I have recently discovered the scrapbook area though. The paper they have is awsome!! Beautiful designs and fairly cheap. I bought a grass design that I will cover a round with (then put clear Contact over it) and I'm going to make a pumpkin to put on it. I can't wait.

I use wrapping paper or scrapbook paper and cover it in clear plastic wrap ( like saran wrap). It's much cheaper than contact paper.
It's a little tricky to keep it wrinkle free, but it's worth the effort. Then, I fold/wrap the ends like a birthday gift and secure it with tape on the back.

That is pure genius!! Those 12 x 12 sheets would fit the 10" cake rounds perfectly and you could match to each occasion! Cool idea - thanks!

I also use scrapbook paper alot, covered by cellophane. When I was at AC MOore the other day, I bought a piece of styrofoam that was 12" square, about 1/2" thick. I then picked out a piece of scapbook paper the same size. The styrofoam was shrinkwrapped in plastic, so I left it as it was. I taped the scrapbook paper to the top of the styrofoam, covered the whole shebang in cellophane and then edged the board with ribbon. It worked out pretty well. Its the cake in my pics with the "65" on top.
Also, the princess pillow board is done the same way, with marabou boa trimming the edges!

Thanks everyone for sharing their great tips!

Thanks for the web site address cakesbyjess! I may order some things from there. I went to my local Michael's today & they don't carry the florist foil icon_sad.gif . The lady working there told me that I would probably have to check with a florist shop to find it. I may check with a couple to see if they would be able to sell me some, but if not, the ideas for the wrapping paper & scrapbook paper are fantastic!! icon_smile.gif I can't wait to try both!!

I checked out the website too...kind of expensive but pretty!
But it says it's not food safe.....do you put something between it and the cake?

sunlover00 , on that website it said to put parchment paper between the foil & the cake. I wonder if maybe the clear contact paper would work too. For anyone that has used floral foil, what do you use to protect the cake?

Ok, not that it matters, but if you are a 'legal' setup, be careful about using anything that isn't FDA approved like the Wilton foil. Florist foil is NOT FDA approved, neither is contact paper, wrapping paper, etc. It even says it on the Country Kitchen site, but they sell it on the same page as the approved stuff. Wonder what they think it's used for..... icon_wink.gif

I got lucky at a garage sale and got a HUGE role (it's like 2 inches thick on the cardboard tube) of silver wrapping paper that is super thick for $2, so that's what I use but I'm not a business either (technically, ha ha).

You beat me to it, arosstx......I didn't want to burst any bubbles but contact paper is not food safe.

I think it matters whether you're legal or just do it for fun/hobby b/c there are certain chemicals, etc. that the can can absorb from non FDA approved items.

Press n Seal Saran Wrap would probably work well to cover any non-food safe board cover.

I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking that's not food safe. icon_lol.gif My Wilton instructor made a point that we understood, even if your not in a "legal" business everything should be food safe. Think of the chemicals on the things your using. I cover mine in regular foil & saran. I just think if I wouldn't feed my kids on it, then I will not sell a cake on it. thumbs_up.gif Even using all the "pretty" paper is a great idea, just cover it in food safe quality stuff. Contact paper isn't. read the list of stuff(If it's still listed).

not FDA approved.........but everytime I'm in Home Depot I check out the odds and ends rolls of wallpaper they have for like a dollar a roll........it works wonderfully ....it's nice and thick and sturdy and tons of designs......and it already has like a plastic type coating on it! Easy to wash and reuse.

We have to go through this about every month or so. Last time, I contacted the company who manufactures Contact, and they themselves use it for cake board covering, and assured me that it was not harmful. Many of us have been using it for a long, long, time with no adverse affects. Janice

I buy my colored foil from www.cakedeco.com. Just do a search on their site for foil and then click on foil wrap. It is 5.95 per roll and each roll is 20 inches wide and 50 feet long. They do not tell you the shipping on their site, but in my past experiences the shipping is not that bad.

I don't know if this one of our members here at CC, but this is helpful, in my opinion.

To each your own, but I choose to NOT use contact paper, no matter what the price convenience may be. And, I've also been well aware for some time now as to the lunchbox safety, that some still do not know about.

http://www.tackyliving.com/serendipity/index.php?/archives/87-Litterbox-cake-and-food-safe-plastics.html

Anyways, there is some good information on here and this is what CC is all about, members helping each other.
