What's been the most helpful idea you've had from someone who isn't a cake maker?

I'm about ¾ way through a fairy castle cake (which is being picked up early tomorrow morning) and it's now nearly half past midnight. I thought I'd be up until 3am, sticking teeny-tiny circles onto ice cream cornets to make the turrets. icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gif

My darling husband suggested I 'paint' the cones. So I thought I'd give it ago. I mixed some 'shimmer pink' edible lustre with some confectioners glaze. IT LOOKS FAB! Whilst the glaze was still tacky, I lightly sprinkled some edible glitter.

Phew!

My DH gives me ideas all the time. A lot of the time, he'll help me refine cake ideas, but sometimes he just comes up with the whole thing. My Evolution of a Graduate cake was his idea. He'll do stuff like your DH did, too. Sometimes not knowing all the fancy ways to do something can make their ideas so simple! icon_smile.gif

It was my DH's idea to make the pill bottle cake in my gallery.

My DH is usually really good at giving me ideas. I couldn't figure out what I wanted to make the treads on my tire/car cake for the fair. He suggested that I just use the wavy Wilton fondant cutter. Worked like a charm. Wouldn't you know it, even with all of the time and details on the car, the most comments were made on the tire treads! Also, my son had me go get my heat embossing gun that I use for rubber stamping to spot heat fondant while putting red and white strips of fondant together to make one sheet of fondant. It would heat the fondant just enough to make the pieces stick together, thus forming one sheet! (It's the red, white and blue one in my pictures)

I don't get great ideas from people who don't decorate. My MIL likes to give me ideas but they all seem to involve using twizzlers or are stuff that makes it obvious that she has no idea how to do ANY decorating. icon_rolleyes.gif
Last fall she thought I should use a twizzler as a wand because it would be easier icon_confused.gif , never mind that it would be laying there looking like a twizzler and not a wand and the whole point of decorating isn't because something is "easier". icon_lol.gif

Some times hubby helps some times I just want to wack him in the head. Last night I was working on my cake for the state fair, it is a pig picinic party with a table and pigs sitting around it. I have just got done cutting and shaping 120 potato chips cut the size of a tip 4 decorating tube and he walks by and says wow it would be cool if you could make some flys buzzing around. FLYS? FLYS!!!! WHAT DO YOU THINK I AM A MINIATURE ARTEST!!!!( sorry for screaming icon_redface.gif ) I could of strangled him right then and there. Sorry had to rant for a min. But some times he has given me brillint ideas like putting a shot glass into my margarita cake to make it drinkable.
