Hi Everyone,

I have a special project for my father and FIL.

We are having a joint birthday celebration at Christmas time for their 60th and 70th birthdays.

I am planning on making a 8"6" cake. I was going to ice in buttercream and use circle fondant accents and ribbon to decorate. Can I attach the fondant circles with addtional buttercream (will it stick) or do I need to attach the fondant with fondant adhesive.

I will be buying ready made fondant (Wilton) since I won't have time to make my own and it is only for the accent circles.

I really want this cake to do special, so your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Additional buttercream will work just fine. I have never even heard of fondant adhesive and I have been doing this for 8 years. What is it?

The Wilton fondant will stick just fine with buttercream. thumbs_up.gif

You could make MMF, it cheap, tastes a whole lot better, wrapped in seran wrap and foil then placed in a zip lock bag, then in an air tight container, it will keep for ages. (You could make it now, color the part you need and have it ready this afternoon.) When you're ready to use it, roll it around in your hands to warm it up. If it's too stiff give it a very few seconds in the microwave. Then you can knead it and it's ready to go. (I hate fondant, can you tell?) icon_rolleyes.gif

If you find that you are having trouble getting the fondant to stick, lightly brush some warm water on the back of the piece, let it set for about 20 seconds to soften slightly, then stick it on.

An alternative is to use buttercream icing to attach the fondant decorations to the cake.

Thank you for all the advice.

I am currently in Boston, but will be making the cake in Toronto. That is why I want to use the Wilton fondant (for ease of use and availability since time will be short when I am on vacation).

I will try your ideas.

BC is just fine. Also keep in mind to roll the fondant fairly thin. Pieces tend to slide down the side of the cake if they are too thick and heavy.
