Who here bakes just to be baking?
Right now im craving some cake so bad I might just bake myself a mini cake. Since getting the baking strips I have no cake scraps. I miss cake scraps and the extra frosting. It was so good.
Today I did some sketches of cakes for my book; and then later today I made some large premade bows and some water lilies. (Just cause I have nothing better to do with my Sunday, and well........so it will save me some time later when I have an actual cake to do). So that got me wanting to decorate a cake, but I have no real reason to make one. Arghh! Now not only do I want to eat the cake, but I want to decorate it. After paying the bills this week im too broke to even make a freebie cake for myself.
I guess i'll just make a jiffy mix cornbread cake and frost that. Can't be too bad.
I feel so pitiful.
Me.... Me...Me..Me
I love to bake and my DH cans. We have been baking and canning today. We do canning for 3 local stores and had to get out apple butter, hot green tomatoes and pickled eggs this weekend. In the mean time I made almond cookies and Banana nut bread cake.
I Love it so much!
i acually don't like to bake at all but i have to in order to have a cake to decorate.
I just love decorating the cakes, so if anyone would like to come to my house and bake some cakes for me, please feel free to do it..... lol

MidnightSnackCake,
You poor thing! I feel so sorry for you ![]()
Jiffy cornbread instead of cake, it's just not right!
But if you do - what do you use for frosting.
I really, really like to bake. Just not the same thing, over and over.... I came to this site looking for different/better cake and frosting recipes.
However, I'm now trying to make my cakes look more interesting (by decorating them) as well as good to eat.
And yes, I, too just get an undeniable urge to have cake every so often (and the urge is more often than I'd like) ![]()
I find baking very relaxing, and when stressed have been known to bake up a storm, even if I wind up giving it away ![]()
I just made a vanilla-carmel (flavored creamer) cake with b/c frosting today. I would shove some through the monitor if I hadn't sent it home with my son for his wife and kids to enjoy.
Sorry.
Do you have the makings for s'mores - at least that would be more cookie like than cornbread is cakelike....
Midnight.....
Look under cookies forum for the almond cookie recipe I posted (topic Almond Cookies) you probably have everything in your cabinet to make them!
Might be better than jiffy bread.
DH says I'm a baking addict. I bake more than I decorate. This weekend I made pumpkin pecan cake and fresh apple cake. YUM!!! Shared with neighbors so I won't eat it all. Also some homemade bread sticks to go with soup. I just love mixing all that stuff together and creating something good.
Do you mean you're going to make Jiffy cornbread, or one of the Jiffy cake mixes?
Me, me, me! My Son-IL calls it Anger Baking. You know, like when someone gets upset, sometimes they eat or clean? He teases me about it all the time.
And not just cakes - I do the cookies, pies, pastries, and breads, too!
Needless to say, my electric bill (electric oven) shoots up like a rocket from November thru December.
Hey, what the heck, it makes the house smell good, right?

oh thats me...my brother has told me he cant eat anymore..says he gaining weight ( he has always had a prob w/ this ) my kids just love it cause there is always something practice cookies, practice cake, mmf, candy from mold that im trying on the table..my hubby just wants the cake scraps..ill never be able to make cake balls even with all the practice baking i do....lol...
so i make all this stuff and then give most of it away...lol
just wish i could get up the nerve to make a BIG practice cake...i wanna do a topsey tervey cake ..ahhhh to dream...
oh yea i dream about cakes too...im just a nut case.
When I was a little girl, I read a lot, and I loved to read recipe books. I would wait until my mom went to bed and then I'd sneak into the kitchen and cook or bake. Now I realize how dangerous it was, but back then I would do it all the time. I would eat as much as I could, and then have to hide or throw away the evidence. My mom was forever wondering what was happening to the groceries. I just told her the truth about 6 months ago. I'm 34 next month.......... ![]()
tmriga,
that is me, too! I am relatively new to the decorating side of the fence (started in March) but have been baking since I was allowed to use the oven by myself. I love to bake cakes, of course, but also cookies, muffins, breads, pies, pretty much just about anything! Even things like creme brulee. All of my siblings love to cook and I got all of the baking inclination in the family. I bake a lot to unwind after the kids have gone to bed and I send a lot of stuff to work with my hubby so I can bake and get it out of the house. I am also the designated dessert person for my hubby's poker nights. So baking is my first passion, decorating is my second.
hey tmriga...just bump that thermastat down a bit when you bake in the winter and let that heat that comes from your oven do more that just cook...thats what i do
hey i figure every little bit helps
Too late girls........I made myself a jiffy mix cornbread cake! LOL. As now is the season of pumpkin and majority of the orders im getting right now is for pumpkin cakes and cookies, I got curious in the process and decided to add pumpkin spice oil to my cornbread. So I got it all mixed together and put in the stove; waited about 15 mins, and went to check on it. Upon opening the stove it looked exactly the same as it did 15 mins ago, only slighty cooked. Then i looked at the pan. MY DBAS had put a cake strip on the pan. Why did I do that? This is not a cake, but oh look how pretty and level it is. So I learned that cake strips "do" work with other things than cake.
Well after another 10 mins, cause it took a little longer to cook, I took my "cake" out of th oven to cool. I waited a little while, then I went back in the kitchen to frost it with some pumpkin flavored buttercream. I got me a cup of ginger/lotus tea, and came back to the comp. Before I could sit down i had stuffed half the slice into my face seeing as it had been about 2 hrs since my inital craving. OMG!!! IT IS SOOOOO GOOOOOOD! I cant believe it turned out this good! Wow! Im in shock! Pumpkin flavored cornbread is the S---! And because i had used a cake strip it came out spongier and more cake like.
Girls I think I may have invented something! There are six more boxes of this stuff in my pantry. Somebody's about to start baking for no reason!
hmm........i wonder how it would turn out if I colored the mix orange, added the flavor, and baked it in a muffin pan? Pumpkin cornbread/muffins?
Oh, Midnight , you are FUNNY!! I think that's why I like this place so much...we can come here and tell our wildest baking stories and everyone can so relate !!!
I love to bake, too, but do get tired of BAKING cakes (BORING). I love to decorate them, though, and enjoy trying many, many different recipes when baking. I love to try new cookies, cheesecakes (my favorite) and well.....just anything. Home made goods are real comfort foods for most people, I think, and just the smell and how it makes me feel in the fall and winter are great.
Where did you all get your love of baking and decorating FROM??? Me, my grandma, on my mother's side. She taught me at a pretty young age to make things like homemade rice pudding (YUM-O).......and Pennsylvania Dutch chicken & spaetzle. Oh, man talk about some good stuff !!!! My mother is a crafty person, knitting, sewing, quilting....and I think that's where I got my "decorating" sense.
This is a great topic !!!
i don't really know where i got my decorating skills as i am the only one in my family that is well 'creative'.
but i love to create anything- flower arranging, making hair bows for my girls, as well as sewing (i have made all my kids bed room sets and curtains) you name it, if its crafty and creative i will have a go!!!
i find it is very relaxing!!! but with four kids sometimes i don't always get time to do it....

I certainly did not get my skills from any of the females in My family! They were definitely not bakers.
I had an uncle (now passed on) who owned a bakery in PA. When we would come from NY to visit, I just wanted to sit in the shop all day; the smell would draw me like a moth to a flame.
Later I would be influenced by two female neighbors who baked on a regular basis.
Years later life events caused illness and depression. The doctor told me to find a hobby. I took up cake decorating. It got me back into the kitchen, cooking and baking. It has turned into an OCD, but a Nice OCD.

My grandma and mom took Wilton decorating classes when I was little. I got to help eat all their practice cakes! I remember how much fun they were having learning something new. They both are crafty, too. My grandmother sews and quilts and mom did everything else. It's been fun to show my mom some of the tips and techniques that I use to decorate cakes that she never knew about.
I've baked plenty of times just to bake. My parents kept my daughter for an entire week and I must have baked cookies three times that week.
I will always want to bake something as long as there are different cake and cookie projects that I have not yet done. Even still I wouldn't get bored.
Talk about addicted to baking.
Me too!
Right now my body is shaking from baking withdrawl. Oven went dead yesterday while I was making cookies. ALLLLLL I had planned for yesterday and my day off today was to bake and decorate, bake and decorate. For no reason other than I REALLY REALLY HAVE TO BAKE! And I don't even have a real reason to make anything, I just NEED to.
So today I bought an oven. Won't be here until Wed. or Thur. though! So I got some cake dummies. That should tide me over for a while anyway!
I used to bake just to bake no fancy decorations or anything like that, then something just clicked and now I bake to decorate. The hardest thing is pulling myself away from Cake Central long enough to bake or decorate.
I'm constantly running back and forth looking for ideas!!!!!! What a wonderful addiciton. ![]()
tmriga mentioned anger baking....I happy bake lol. When I am happy, all I want to do is bake. Every time something good happens, I want to bake anything...pies, muffins, breads, cakes...anything sweet
.
But when I'm not happy.....*sigh* I eat all that food. So I think I'm gonna try to stay happy. lol
I am a crfty person also. Knitting, piano, sewing, drawing...cake decorating
I don't really know where I got all this from...I guess just a lack of a creative family kinda created it, I dunno.
I think I'm going to go see if I have any jiffy mix... ![]()

I love to bake too.....mostly because I love to eat!! YIKES! your pumpkin cornbread.....OMG sounds awesome! I love the sophisticated flavors....no 'white cake or 'plain choc. cake' for me! Give me spices and nuts and berries and flavor! I also really like to cook. I just love the kitchen. And my kitchen is a nightmare...the layout is wacky bec. it is an OLD farmhouse...so what is now the kitchen used to be the whole house...I have room for nothing...but don't really have the $$ for a re-do.
My whole family is pretty creative...my bro. can draw and play piano (plus he is a software developer for WebMD...that is pretty creative! and smart!)...he also does improv. My mom can crochet and play piano and sing and garden. We are all pretty musical actually. I can't draw very well, but I can brainstorm....like I can have the good idea, then someone else has to make it happen! But I also love to quilt, crochet, play piano, garden, sing....BAKE!! Anything but CLEAN MY HOUSE! I love to HAVE a clean house, but I am not good at making MY house clean. We can have a 'cleaning day' at my mom's or sis's house, and that is fine and easy, but my own house....ARG!
Anything that can be an OCD thing for my family, IS an OCD thing for us.
I have always resisted baking just because "I MUST". I don't want to gain 50 lbs! I work in a small office, and the other 4 girls there get "annoyed" because as you know everyone is always trying to lose weight!
But, now I know I am not alone. I read recipe books for fun....and I sit and drool....and make my husband listen to me go on and on (much like I did here
pps![]()
Now....there was the cake I was thinking of, that I may just make tomorrow for the heck of it....ginger cake with pear compote filling....perhaps a rum/creamcheese topping, not too sure about that part yet. I think I want to make it in jelly-roll. I have been DREAMING about this cake! I really Am demented!!! ![]()
I love the baking bit but I probably don't do it as often as I would like cos I HATE the cleaning bit!!!!
I definitely have a problem...I'd rather bake than do what I'm supposed to do (um, clean the house??)...gets me in trouble...
DH doesn't even eat half the stuff I make so I take it to the office...I had to tell them at work that they wouldn't be getting anything from me for awhile b/c I had to clean and organize my house...
Got the baking genes from both sides of the family...my mom and grandmother (dad's mom)...baked my first chocolate chip cookies with my grandma. Mom is my hero, she decorates for everything!
anyway, DH will be so proud of me b/c I didn't turn on the oven tonight...LOL but I REAALLY want some cake...can you send me some of those muffins via e-mail...??
