I'm getting ready to do my very first buttercream transfer for a halloween cake and I'm wondering, is it possible to do a buttercream transfer of just words? I mean could I print out "Happy Halloween" from my computer, trace the mirror image on wax paper with buttercream and then cover that with the cake icing color and transfer it juat as I would a picture? As anybody tried this? Thanks!

I have not tried this, but it sounds like it would work. You might need to make the words a bit thicker than you would like. I don't know though - with the icing on the back it might work!
dido ... with the icing on the back will work good luck!!!
I have tried it twice. The first time I did fairly large letters but they were narrow. During the step where you press down to eliminate lines and spaces, the litters got pressed down and became a little distorted. It wasn't too bad (it is in my photos - it is the one that says "Welcome Matthew).
The second time, I tried to do a Bible verse and the writing was too small and it got way too smeared to use.
I do plan on trying one more time this week for a Scooby Doo cake I'm doing. I am going to use large letters and a font that is very thick and I think it will turn out okay.
i have also done one with words and it also got way smeared. fyi..if you have a programme on your computer like photo shop or something like that you can flip the image before you print it. that way you dont have to do anything else after exceot get to work on the transfer.
Just an observation, not sure if it works this way for sure yet or not, but...
with my first fbct, (in my photos of the great pumpkin), I did the outline first of everything. I set this out and let it dry out. (I had it on a clip board and on a sheet protector that had a very fine layer of crisco). then I added the layers on top. I didn't notice any squirming of the lines as they were solid, not squishy any more.
Second time (last night) I did Elmo and I did it all in one sitting. This time I noticed there was some wiggling with the lines as the outlines were still wet, but with Elmo, who would know? LOL
Both of them released from the sheet protector with no issue at all. The dried/hard outlined buttercream attached to the frosting of the FBCT, not stuck to the paper. Oh, and I use 100% crisco too (don't know if that matters or not).
The only risk I can see to having solid, dried outlines/words is that they are a bit brittle and can flake off the paper if tapped while you are filling in the FBCT. I had an outline on the edge that I didn't realize was outside my 8" diameter, I piped/outlined that part of the image and later I realized that as I was working, little by little that outline fell off and was scattered around the table where I was working (they fell off as I flipped the sheet protector up to view my worming issues.) This wouldn't be a problem as long as you aren't moving your image around much or careful with where you rest your arm/hands.
Good luck - maybe I'll try that too. My writing stinks! LOL

Thanks for the replies. I think I will try this using some of this tips you guys gave. I'll let you know how it turns out! By the way, here's a website with lots of free *cute* fonts: http://www.fontface.com/fonts/a.html
