I have to do a 3D volkswagen beetle for next weekend and I am dreading it. The last car cake that I did was such a pain. And I wasn't happy with how it came out either. My DH even said it wasn't as good as usual....

How can I make it come out realistic looking? I want it to look like an older style beetle. It's going to be orange fondant. How should I do the windows? I have a couple of library books with pics for reference.

Help!

Here is how I made it: http://capricorn.vuodatus.net/blog/160529?showcomments=yes

Sorry it's only in finnish.

I did not have any car-shaped pan.

That cruiser pan is good, but I don't know if it would really make a realistic bug. Carving probably would be best, and I have never carved anything yet.

All you need is a 10" round. Cut in half and put halfs together and stand on cut ends. Cut out a wedge for the windshield and hood area. Pipe the window area smooth with white first. Outline in black. Cover the rest of the car in stars and whatever design you'd like. Use 4 Dolly Gem chocolate covered mini donuts for wheels. Pipe on headlights and tail lights.

Thanks for the help! I was already planning on carving the cake. The cruiser pan is cute but I didn't think it was realistic enough. I'm going to have to car raised up, and make the bumper/fenders and other parts from fondant and paint them silver. Hopefully they will not fall off of the car, LOL. We'll see if I can pull it off...

Thanks for all the links! It does help to look at different pictures. I liked the style that jennys-cakes used, but in 3D.

I just need to stop procrastinating and start making all the fondant car parts! icon_confused.gif ...and not wait till the last minute and then have to worry about the pieces being dry.

I have a 3-d volkswagon cake in my photos. It was very easy. You could do it bigger without too much trouble. Mine only served 6, LOL. edited to add mine looks cartoony but change the colors and leave the eyes off and it could still look more realistic.

Hi, I just picked up the wilton 3-5 cruiser pan and wonder if one box of cake mix is enough to make this cake. ?? I've never used any kind of the molds before so wonder if I need to make 2 boxes?

Thanks!!

I *think* one would be enough but am not sure. I didn't use the car pan for my cake, I just stacked and sculpted sheet cakes.

Good luck!

The instructions on the pan says that it takes 6 1/2 cups of batter.
here's a link it says at the top.

Well, I have the cake in the oven as we speak. I made it using Duncan Hines Swiss Chocolate cake. I just used one box and put the whole thing in the pan. Cross your fingers!

I've done several of these cakes. I always thought they were the easier cakes to do, but time consuming (and I don't use fondant). Good Luck on yours!

I used my cruiser pan cake with one box of DC and it didn't fill up the whole pan. In this case it was a good thing, it looked more like the car I was going for (the red race car from the movie Cars). Why can't wilton make a smaller pan that fits perfectly with one box of mix? thumbsdown.gif
