OK, not exactly a cake question, but you guys are always so supportive. I really need to lose some weight. That's all there is to it. Is it possible to be a good cake decorator and still lose weight? I see tickers on the bottom of some of your posts. I LOVE decorating but it's really making me gain weight because I love eating it too! Seriously, I need to lose like 70 lbs. Any suggestions? Or is it really true that you can't trust a skinny baker?
Love you guys, thanks in advance.
Once you've been making cakes for a while you probably won't eat nearly as much. My husband laughs about that, I make at least a couple cakes a month and a VERY small piece keeps me happy. I also find that I don't eat as many sweets as I used to, if I could just stay away from all the salty snacks I'd be smaller.
Its very hard, in my opinion. I had a great exercise regimen going for several years then I took the three wilton classes and have not only gained 30lbs but have also lost exercising regularly.(Due mainly to saying rather than exercising I'll make this cake) I've started to get back to working out and I chew loads of gum if I'm working on cake(no sneaking icing) and if there are any cake scraps I immediately throw them into the food processor to use another time. Although every once in a while my will power is gone and I'll sneak some. Good luck.
My sister and I joke about how we should've started decorating cakes a long time ago. She'll still eat a piece here and there but I won't hardly touch the stuff. I don't even eat any of the cake I make for my own family (for their birthdays and stuff...) I'm so tired of cake.
After struggling with my weight for almost all of my life - this has been and is still the best diet I have ever tried - The Cake Baker Diet. I don't touch the stuff anymore. I don't even want anything sweet outside of my kitchen either. Now - I do try all my frostings and stuff because I would hate to send out something that was bad - but only a teeny tiny taste and I am done! ![]()

I'd have to agree... I used to just about live on cake (always been a baker) but since I started decorating, I can't eat it anymore..... the smell of icing turns my stomach.... although it's only my cakes I can't eat,
when i am out I can still scoff down with the best of them.....
Oh my does that say something about MY cooking ![]()

I agree, as a professional pastry chef I can even say that sugar is an appetite killer. It triggers your bodies "i'm full start digesting now" switch. You'll likely nibble all day but a tables spoon of sweet stuff every two hours actually INCREASES your metabolism. You never see really over weight Pastry chefs only Bread Bakers and Chefs that eat lots of starchy bread and meat and potatoes.
Also, I put on 40lbs in 3 months when I QUIT being a full time pastry chef, and have lost 26lbs in 6 weeks now that i'm back. It's all about calories, what goes in has to come out plus you have to burn the additional calories of the amount you want to lose. All chefs are taught caloric nutrition as part of their education and in most cities in Canada someone on the staff has to be able to give you the nutritional information of what your eating.
This is all you need to know : A pound of body fat equates to approximately 3500 calories. So if you have a calorie deficit of 500 calories (meaning that you burn 500 calories more than you eat each day) you would lose approximately one pound per week:
500 x 7 = 3,500
It's easy to see that a calorie deficit of 1000 calories would mean that you'd lose approximately two pounds per week.
each gram of fat in your diet is 9 calories. protein has 4 and carbohydrates have 4 ..Booze has 7
If you have issues with learning portion size or being an emotional eating bindger than do what I do and eat until you burst !!! but eat vegetables like corn and brocolli or a GIANT family size salad. 4 heads of romaine and caesar salad dressing is still only as many calories as a chocolate bar.
Oh and I suggest seeing your family doctor about what your daily caloric burn is (the amount of calories you need to live for your size and lifestyle, and the amount your body burns when your dooing nothing ) and getting a really good colon cleaning.
The current trends in culinary arts are all about foods that clean the colon. Apparently starchy foods and protein can stick to the walls of your gut and stay in there for several YEARS making you feel icky, lethargic, and preventing you from digesting right, which all help make you fat. A clean bumb is a happy body.
Wow that almost turned into a book!

The book SHOULD be out in January.
It's an instructional manual for blown and pulled sugar that i'll be using in my class.
Small and cheap but to the point and easy to follow.
an alternative to the $100+ hardcover books.

Well I lost 73 lbs in 1 yr and I didnt follow any special diet just ate one good meal for supper and had things like yogurt and fruit during the day. It takes a heck of a lot of discipline thats the first thing you have to do. I also cannot excercies much as I have an artificial leg so I did a lot of waking. It also helped because my dh was very supportive and walked with me and also helped me when I was tepted to gorge lol but he also realized that once in a while I needed a treat so he would pick me up an ice cream cone or something and suprise me. Now I still need to watch as it seems I'm one of those people who just smell food and I gain weight and theres no way I want it all back lol. So my advice is to just persevere and try to keep your mind busy so you dont dwell on food or how hungry you are but most importantly eat sensably and dont try to starve yourself cause if your like me you'll be doing this most of your life so better to start as you mean to go on. If you just try to starve yourself it wont work you will truly get fed up of being hungry and break down. Good luck I wish you all the best in this. ![]()
Losing weight is one of the hardest things in the world to do. I would say portion control is probably the way to go. You have to make a true commitment to counting calories and learning how to eat all over again. Not an easy task. Good luck in you effort. Everyone here will support you and give you encouragement. ![]()
I don't eat the cakes I decorate, or nibble at the sugar bits - but I do scoff crisps by the sack! I got a dog - she forces me to go out and walk her because she looks so forlorn (labrador; big dopey eyes) and that's helped enormously! I recommend them highly - the downside is that she jumped up on the counter and ate three fully decorated minature cakes once ![]()
