I'm making a double-sided mold. I've heard two ways of keeping the silicone from sticking, one is to coat it with veg oil and the other with dish soap. Is there a best of the two? Also, If I want to connect a part of the top with the bottom, can I leave it uncoated so it will stick? Thanks!!!
I'm so sorry I have no idea, but maybe this will give you a bump up?
What mold making product are you using? If it's silicone, either oil or soap works fine. Whatever you prefer. Shortening and Vaseline work great too.
Some products stick better than others if left uncoated, but all will want to stick at least a bit. If you're using a silicone clay (which wants to stick less than liquid silicone), try roughing up the part you want to adhere a bit -- use an Exacto knife to score it or a grater to provide a rough surface. That'll give the new clay a physical bond in addition to the natural chemical bond it'll try to form.
I don't know if you've started already, but when I made my double sided moulds using silicone plastique (don't you just love that stuff!), I rubbed the parts that I didn't want to stick with some solid vegetable shortening and it worked perfectly.
Any parts of the first half of the mould that are not oiled will stick to the second half (I had to patch one of mine as DH was playing with it and split it! I just rubbed a little of the silicone into my already made mould and it melded to it perfectly).
