Hey CCusers

I made a square cake (one layer)today and I hated it. I think the biggest reason is because I can never make them look as pretty as rounds. I did not take a pic of it. Seems like they are almost impossible for me to make the icing smooth. I prefer not to make them is this just me???

It's not just you icon_smile.gif. They are harder - especially on those corners, and the trend right now is round, though square is about to have its day I think once people get tired of the rounds. Square cakes look great when they are stacked, especially at opposing angles - take a look at the square cake gallery. Or mixed with a round, etc. icon_smile.gif

I've avoided making square cakes, too. They are harder to make look good. The corners are really tough to make "square". I've seen several tutorials on how to form the square corner, but have yet to have one turn out well. Alas, if they become more popular, we'll be practicing more. I agree, there are many wonderful cakes in the galleries that are stacked or mixed and look wonderful. We'll just have to practice more. icon_lol.gif

I like the look of the double layer square cake it's a nice change to the round, but I haveto have a hard time getting it as smooth as the round. I guess it just takes more practice.

Am I losing it or didn't I just answer this post?

I really like the square cakes best, and I also like the idea of mixing the shapes. Actually I don't find any of the cakes boring, they are all beautiful! Janice

There were about a million more that I love, but this would be a LONG reply. icon_smile.gif I think the height of the cake layers is an important factor, too.

I love the way square cakes look but I hate icing them.

I much prefer square cakes to round ones. To me, round cakes are...typical.

Oooo, Angelas those squares are beautiful. I think that the square cakes are much more complex in the designs and they look more visually appealing. Don't get me wrong I love the round cakes too but given the choice I would love to have any of the ones that are in your pics.

I think square cakes are more interesting. That said, I still can't ice a square cake to save my life! icon_cry.gif I've read the tutorials, practiced, ect, but it just doesn't seem to work for me....it's those stinkin' corners! My goal is to make a present cake, but the square thing has me baffled, so we'll see....

I have to agree with CakesBySandy.......I think squares have a certain air of simple sophistication and eleagance to them!! Even if they're just plainly iced with a ribbon around the bottom.........I think they definitely show the talent of the decorator because they are so difficult......though I don't know if non decorating people realize HOW difficult they are!!! I've never tried to ice a square perfectly smooth....but I can just imagine it's a pain........I'd probably have to charge more for a square just for that reason lol!!

I really love square cakes. I think they can look just as cute as a round one, although i agree it is hard to get the corners great on a square (many thats just because im a beginner!!!)

I love square cakes...I think they have more character than rounds...now I haven't attempted to ice a square cake, so I'm sure that will change my perspective on things! Our wedding cake was 2 stacked squares, the top one at opposing angles, or whatever you would call it...so cute!

I agree that square cakes are more difficult to make, but with practice you can do it. icon_biggrin.gif They are definitely worth the effort to learn. I especially love them when the tiers are staggered or offset. The also look great combined with rounds. Very elegant. Don't give up. Just practice. thumbs_up.gif
