you don't have to use buttercream, you can use like an apricot glaze to seal it,(crumb coat it). It makes it a lot easier to work with the fondant using those underneath though

Some people put a glaze over the cake and not Buttercream. I've seen chocolate, marmalade and apricot glazes used. The idea, I think, is more to control the crumbs and seal in the moisture than to "ice" the cake. You do need a surface the fondant will adher to, also. What do you have in mind to do? Lots of wonderful cakes have been made by people experimenting. Give it a go. Have fun. icon_biggrin.gif

Most people don't like fondant. I always put as much icing on my cake as I would if there wasn't any fondant on it. I have never seen anyone eat all of the fondant on their piece of cake. They either peel it off right away or they get half way through it and can't handle anymore.

i agree, i like to put a good amount underneath in case they don't like the fondant, although, if you put enough filling in that might be enough.
