Get this. A little background first. I'm a paintball junkie. Love to go to the fields and am being coached and trained for tournaments. I went to one of the fields I go to on a regular basis, went into the store to get my nitro tank filled and the owner says, "I hear you do cakes". Yes I do, what do you want me to make I ask. She proceeds to tell me that her DIL is having a baby shower next month and she went on and on how she only likes Publix cakes. She asks me to make a cake that tastes just like what they sell. Any idea what flavor? Nope, just make a small sample 1/2 choc. 1/2 vanilla for her to sample. I've only had one cake from that grocery store and it was yuck. It was dry and stale. Mind you they make several flavors, but the owner doesn't know which one she likes and has no idea about icing or filling. So I'm to do a 6" 1/2 & 1/2 cake for someone to sample that only likes Publix??????????? Yeah, right. I'm just glad I was in a hurry and didn't have time to finish the conversation. When I see her again, I think I'll tell her to go to Publix. (nicely of course)
Am I wrong or is this just goofy?

Great idea...no, you are not wrong, and yes this IS goofy, strange, ridiculous-whatever...and if you decide to try to work with this goof-you'll be sorry... icon_wink.gif (JMHO)

Hmm, I wonder if it's the icing that is really what she likes. I know that some cousins (or something icon_redface.gif ) really like cakes from Sam's Club and they really rave about the icing...

Anyway, sounds like this one could be a bit high maintenance...yeah, move on! icon_cool.gif

That's what I thought, I'm steering clear of this one. How am I supposed to make it taste like someone else's esp. not knowing what kind of cake it is?!?!?!?! Geesh!

You can be 100% sure she wont be happy with any price you give her unless its as much as or less than a Publix cake! Run! Run fast! LOL

The only reason I can think of that someone would want you to make a just-like-____ (Publix, Wal-Mart, whatever) cake is that for some reason they think you'll be cheaper - work out of your house, no overhead, right?

I guess it's possible they could want some kind of decoration that Publix doesn't do, but it just seems that anybody with sophisticated cake decorating sense would also have some idea that cornbread masquerading as cake is not generally considered a desirable confection.

LOL! You guys are hilarious! I can just picture a kid coming up to the door at Halloween time dressed as a decorated cornbread!! Too funny!
And yes, they are making not only baby showers over the top but kids parties as well! They are starting to spend what they would on a fricken wedding for peets sakes! I guess if you have that kinda money to through around...

Those are the "someone's" that I get all the time. That's exactly what they think. I just learned how to say no today. Yeah for me! I wear the apron in this business and so tired of people using it as a doormat into "Let's make a deal" land. I'm nice but not stuck on stupid. icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif
Yep, I'd run too....really fast icon_wink.gif
Oh yeah, I've done a tasting for a baby shower and bridal shower. Sweet 16's are just as elaborate as weddings now.

That is GREAT!! I will have to remember that one!! I almost choked on my wine.. icon_lol.gif

I've often compared Publix cake to kitchen sponge. But cornbread is perfect. icon_biggrin.gif
