I have to make a 3 tier 1st birthday cake & have no idea what size pans I need or whether they should be 2 or 3" in height. I have never attempted a 3 tier cake but I promised my daughter I would try. I'm a new member and hope there is someone out there than can assist me
many thanks. Cake pieces needed 65
I'm not a pro, but how many servings do you need? That will help you determind which size pans to use and how many layers each cake should be. Most people make 2-layer 2" high cakes (which equals a 4" high cake), but if using a 3" high pan, you only need 1 layer. The 3" high pans are more expensive and harder to find. Generally, as far as pan size goes, you want a 4" difference between layers. For example, a 6" -10"-14". But, it is possible to do 6-8-10, you just won't have as much room at the bottom for a border. I usually just play around with my pans and see what I like. In the end, it's all about personal preference!
If you need to know how many servings a particular pan size will give you, try this link:

amysue I thank you for your quick response, the info was just what i needed. I want to also apologize to anyone who resonded I failed to add serving amount.
If any one would like to share a recipe for the cake I would be grateful ..I was planning on a choc layer & the 2 other layers not quite sure.
I thank you all again
Try the white almond sour cream listed here in the recipe section. It has several variations - including chocolate. I have never had a complaint when using this recipe. Just in case you have a hard time finding the variations, here is the chocolate:
3 whole eggs
2/3 c. flour
1/3 c. cocoa
omit almond
add extra vanilla
Everything else is the same. These amounts are for 1/2 of the recipe. If making the whole thing just double the amounts I gave. One half recipe will give you about 7 cups of batter.
