Okay, this is probably a stupid question but I'm new to a lot of this terminology...what is crumb coating?

It's a thin coat of buttercream you put on the cake first. Then you let it sit, or chill it. It seals in the cake and crumbs, so your next layer is crumb free.

Crumb coating is a thin frosting layer that seals the crumbs in so they don't show up on your completed project.

If you look in the how to make a whimsy, topsy turvey cake tutorial, there are pics of crumb coated cakes.
