Ok, so my Kitchen Aid burnt out a few weeks ago while making MMF. I haven't had a chance to get it fixed yet (KA won't send a new one) so I've been using a B&D hand mixer to make buttercream. Now, that just burned out and I need to make another 3 batches. Any suggestions on what to buy? I'm thinking a hand mixer because they are cheaper than the stand mixers and I still have my KA but which one is going to hold up the best?

look for a high wattage mixer, at least 250-300W. I would also advise giving your mixer a rest... i.e mix for 2-3 mins, rest the mixer for 1, especially when you're using something like a hand mixer.
otherwise, i know a lot of people make MMF by hand, just for this reason... it does tend to glom up mixers.
HTH.

You could try epinions.com, or cooking.com has good user reviews.

I'd try going to Kohls and see if they have any sales on a KithenAid hand mixer.

What kind of buttercream are you making? Is your butter at room tempature? That might help, assuming you're using a powdered sugar frosting.

I do all my MMF by hand, so I'm no help there. I don't want to ruin my KA; I've heard too many stories just like yours.

I hope they fix it for you.

MMF is a deadly killer of the hand mixer. i learned that the hard way. If you can use a standing mixer for it iot would be better but even a standing mixer can take a beating from the dreaded MMF. Best to do it by hand. A little messy but the more you do it the less messy it gets. But..mess is fun.

I agree get a profesional wattage mixer. It seems like you are using it a lot and need something for the heavy duty jobs you use it for. I have the pro Kitchen Aid and love it. But there are bigger and better mixers for the job. Next time I just might go to a restraunt supply store and get a larger table top mixer. More money but built to last.
