Ok, getting ready to start on my madhatter cake - looking at some ideas in the gallery - how do I make fondant balls??? How do I store them and color them. Also, what kind of wires do people use when sticking these fondant balls out of cakes?

By balls do you mean for a border?

I heard of people using the back of a tip like a cookie cutter to cut them out, and that way they are the same size.

Yes, I mean for a border - they looked like perfectly rolled balls in varying sizes....I've never worked with fondant before so I'm not sure of the procedure.

depends on how big a ball you want. You can make fondant pearls by rolling out your fondant and using a round decorating tip to cut out the circles , then roll the pearl in your palm with your fingertip. For a 5mm pearl your would use a 10mm tip. The same should hold true of a ball, just roll the fondant between your palms until it is round, use more or less fondant to make bigger or smaller balls.
You can color the fondant before makeing the balls, or you can airbrush the balls for color. If you color the fondant make several small batches of different colors, and store the excess of any color in plastic wrap. Just store them out on a cabinet so they can harden. After they get hard put them in a ziploc or plastic bowl with a lid, but do not refrigerate.

If you just want random sized balls just grab a small piece of fondant and roll into a ball. You don't have to worry about cutting pieces out if the balls are going to be different sizes.

Ok - sounds pretty easy - I have my cake iced in buttercream so tonight I'm going to start the decorating. I'll let you know how it turns out - thanks for the help.
