I keep hearing that it is so hard to color MMF red and that you should just buy the red wilton fondant if you need a lot of it. I have colored MMF red before, but just for a very small decoration. Now I need to make 100+ red MMF roses. I wanted to get some opinions on what I should use. I'd really love to be able to just use the MMF....what do you all think? TIA

I would color it pink first to make it easier, then add the red coloring. That's what I do but it sure does take a lot of red. Good luck!

There was also a post awhile back where someone said they used cherry kool-aid (the powder, I assume) to color MMF red. I have never tried this, but I've read that it works great...

Can you do the same with buttercream? I have the worst time with red icing. I ordered the Americolor SuperRed today, but want to practice with the color in the meantime.

Just keep adding the red until you get the color you want.

If you don't mind buying your fondant, Satin Ice sell already made red fondant + it is delicious, not like the Wilton. I think you can buy like 2 pounds of Satin Ice for like $20. . .

Yes it works the same with buttercream. I use the Wilton Rose coloring and make it really pink , then I don't have to add so much red. I'm in Canada and we can't get the Americolor here ( unless I order it from the US). Turns out well every time for me. Good luck.

I did the same thing two weeks ago...red MMF roses. They turned out pretty nice (If I can toot my own horn!)I used Americolor Super Red, like you said...It took quite a bit, I'll have to admit! I also added some black to it to deepen the color. I would suggest coloring the fondant in its liquid state!!
