Wilton Contest - I Don't Think It's Fair!

Okay, I haven't read all the posts on this thread or read the contest instructions and rules, but here's what I think:
The rules are the rules. We can shoulda, woulda, coulda all we want but as long as someone is following the rules then they can do "whatever" (right?). And, I agree that just because someone is following someone else's design, it doesn't mean they can do an excellent job! I just got two of Debbie Brown's books and I can guarantee you that my first ones will not look spectacular enough to win any kind of contest !! At least I don't think so ![]()
I say let's just hope that "may the best contestant win"......as long as they were following the rules. Sound good?? ![]()
the actual person that has the final say is the judge! I remember competing with a cake that Coletee Peters actually loved and came to tell me that she loved what I did....
and one of the other judges marked me off for using what she thought was "BLACK" ribbons" ..they were wine colored not black..but I couldn't convince that judge to change the marks..lol
I tried!!
now about 15 years later...I meet that same judge..and they were my CHEF INSTRUCTOR!! go figure!!
Now, we tease each other over that...I call her color blind and she calls me color uncoordinated...but, she has become a good/best friend...
She even trusts me enough to bake small cakes for her when she doesn't have time for them...and I have given her input on design and execution..
So, you didn't win this one! There is always the next one!
I know that is a hard pill to swallow, especially if you put your heart and soul into a cake or design...but,
Think about it...there really isn't anything new out here.....we all "borrow" "teak" and "adapt" each other's designs!!
here is a big hug for you
{{{{{{HUH}}}}}
not the same as winning, but hope it made you feel a little better or at least smile a little!
all the entries are so good, I'm overwhelemed. how to choose?
I personally think that the contest is not based on orginality. I have seen winners on copyrighted characters, like Dora. I am sorry but what is the point of entering a contest and going to the trouble of trying to be original, and creative, when someone wins copying someones elses work or ideas. I am for the person that takes the time and thought to produce an original work of art, with creativeness, neatness and lots of love. It is one thing to use an idea for a cake for a friend or family or even a customer, but for a contest, lets get some people in there that have the moxy to really put the effort into a real work of art. There are some people in this forum that do lovely work, and I do not take that away from anyone, we also have some people that truly do some great original stuff.
I totally agree - I've just visited the link and the bauble ornaments are AMAZING - how would you get fondant so smooth over such a small sphere - they are incredible.
I do think it's odd to win a cake decorating contest with someone elses design - like a painter winning a prize for a copy of someone elses work - however maybe they're judging on skill rather than design?
We'll i don't think it's fair it should be one entry per a person. Yeah the cakes are good and i could'nt do them even if i copied from a book.
I really like the garden party cake and the mushroom garden party any way they are so much better and more original i don't this lady will win anyway.
She should be ashamed to have two cakes in the semi final and should pull one out to give someone else a go.
Well their's my say.
I agree that the cakes are very nice. I do not agree that there are 2 from the same person as finalist. Also, I do not think that the castle cake should even been concidered for the contest because it was entered into another competition (here) and it did take 3rh place. Even though she did not get any prize for her award. The rules do state that the cake must not be entered in any other contest!
naotter,
I think y ou're confusing CC's rules w/ Wilton's. My understanding is that at CC you can't post the same cake in two different contests and that if you place in a previous contest, you can't enter the next one. But Wilton is completely different - and so are state contest, etc. One of the cakes in the Halloween contest is one I saw from the Oklahoma Sugar Art Show pics - so it was in another contest - but i don't think it shouldn't be able to be entered in another.
I also would love to learn about those ornament cupcakes! Those are so awesome! I loved the idea!!! I also think that taj mahal gingerbread is really neat too! I don't have much experience w/ gingerbread but I'd love to get some and that was such a cool idea!
Congratulations Cakesunleashed! Love your work!
I love the ornament cupcakes!! I guess as to the rest of the 'controversy'...my take is , as long as they are following the rules for the specific contest they are entering, what's the problem? Some may not like it, or think it's fair, but it is Wilton's contest and they get to make their own rules! JMHO! ![]()
i hope the person who did these cakes isn't reading this thread. ![]()
if it was me, i would be upset that my peers are trying to bring me down because of their own jealousy.
its not her fault that wilton chose 2 of her cakes. its also not her fault that they chose designs original to another cake artist. she entered them and was chosen - good for her... bad for everyone who entered and didn't get chosen.
i know it stings but life isn't fair. i think everyone should just be happy for her and move on. there will be plenty of other contests to enter and plenty more chances to win.
just my 2 cents
good luck to all the semi-finalists and i hope to compete with you next year! (after i get a year of practice ![]()
I did read the rules for the Wilton contest, and they state that the cake must be created for that contest and not have been entered in any regional or nationally published contest.
That said, I think that all the semi-finalist's cakes are awesome and I agree that the cupcakes are so fantastic!!! I plan on trying my hand at those this Christmas!
By the way, I entered a cake in the contest. It is posted in my photos. It is the baby shower cake that I made for my daughter.
most contests judge on TECHNIQUE...
The people's choice award is usually giving to the cake most people like or find most appealing.
Judges have a sheet that they go down and check off and it's all about the techniques.
I am NOT putting anyone down or suggesting that they didn't do their very best, but sometimes..just as we are the WORST judges of our work...and we pick EVERYTHING apart....we also are so close to the work that we cannot see the "MISTAKES" we make.
Ok, so you don't win this time out of the gate....it hurts and hurts bad, but....don't let that keep you from entering any other competitions.
Also, accusing someone of "cheating" or "plagarizing" is a serious thing.
The world of cake decorating, believe me is a VERY SMALL TIGHT KNIT COMMUNITY....and believe me, if things like that will come out eventually and in it's good time...
But...you also don't want to be known for being a sour grapes sore loser..( not that you are but things have a way of snowballing..lol)
So, keep your chin up, your time will come and that win will be that much more sweeter because of this defeat.
ALSO..
If the cake you enter doesnt win it's division, most contests allow you to re enter it into as many contests you wish to.
MOST CONTESTS!!

Ditto!!!!
Per the Wilton Contest rules "Final judging to determine winners will be accomplished by an expert panel based on the following criteria: creativity of design - 35%; appearance - 35%; technique - 15%; use of materials - 15%." Maybe it was felt the appearance, the technique, and use of materials were so good the creativity of the designs were outweighed by everything else. Also, the rules say "Persons may submit multiple entries, however, limit one prize per person/household." So I'm sure when prizes are rewarded they will note the cakes are from the same person.
i hope the person who did these cakes isn't reading this thread.

well I for one arent posting to b*tch whine or complain....but I will be the first to admit....Im extremely jealous of their talent (especially boween and cakesunleashed)....
its a shame others jealousy has to be protrayed with " its not fair whaaa whaaaa whaa! ![]()
"
Its a real shame they have to read this crap too.....cakerator is absoultely right...I hope they arent reading it!
I bet not one of you would be complaining if it was two of your own cakes up there.....![]()
