As you all can probably tell, I'm new at this icon_rolleyes.gif How can I avoid the cake board getting all slopped up with icing when I'm decorating. I'm kind of a messy icer and I usually end up getting icing everywhere! If i decorate the cake on the cake board, then the board gets all slopped up and doesn't look nice and professional. But is it possible to decorate the cake on something else, then transfer it to the cake board or whatever it is being served on?

It might help if you use the waxed boards or cover your board with foil so it can be easily wiped away.
Welcome! Post your pics!

Thanks! I covered my board with regular aluminum foil and I ended up tearing it so of course it looked worse! I'll definitely try the waxed boards. I'll be sure to post my pics, thanks again!!

I cover all by boards with freezer paper. Any excess icing can be easily cleaned off with a scraper, and then I wipe it down with a paper towel or napkin.

I'm new so ignore this if you want.
I first put the cake on the plate or board I am going to serve it on.
Then I make a "collar" of strips of paper all around the cake.
I then ice the cake and remove the strips of paper leaving a clean area all around the cake.
There's probably better ways, but I have found this works for me (I'm messy too! icon_redface.gif )

That's a really good idea doleta! Thank you all for your suggestions and wish me luck on the cheetah I'm making for my niece this weekend!

I do the same thing doleta does with strips of wax paper and then just pull it away thumbs_up.gif

I don't spread my icing all the way down to the board. Get close, but not all the way, then cover it with your border!
