Just wanted to know the process everyone uses to stack cakes? (Just curious what other people were doing & how.)

dowels and cardboard circles covered in contact paper for me...with a nice wooden dowel pounded straight through the middle.

I use dowels with a double board, I use a hot glue to stick them together. I haven't been brave enough to do the dowel down the center. I still prefer the old way of the dowels with the plastic plates, I think that's the sturdiest but then you have to get your plates back. HTH

Wooden dowels, Again I'm a chicken I don't trust trying the straws. icon_surprised.gif

I use Wilton hollow plastic dowels for larger cakes and Wilton cookie sticks for smaller ones and a wooden center dowel.

straws? as in regular straws or straws specifically made for cake decorating? Now that I think about it - I think I remember seeing someone on Ace of Cakes using big straws when stacking their cake... but they were a much larger diameter than regular drinking straws. I imagine using them instead of wooden dowels would make the whole thing alot lighter

Debster- what are you covering your boards with? When you used plastic plates with dowels, where they smaller than the cake?
Tyty- what are you putting between your cakes?
moptop- the straws that I've seen are those straws they use for those teas with the little tapioca balls in them. I can't remember what the straws are called. I saw them being sold on EBay.
mgdqueen- what kind of contact paper are you using? I find that the contact paper doesn't stick to itself (silly stuff) and let's stuff get in and then they swell. Have you had the same problem?
Keep it coming, I think this could be very informative for everyone.

I use foamcore board, or cake circles, covered in decorative foil or contact paper on both sides. I buy sheets of foamcore and cut it to size.

I prefer to use bubble tea straws instead of regular straws as they are bigger.

That's the "old" way? icon_confused.gif That's how I do it so I thought it was the "current" way! icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

I use wooden dowels, cake-on-cardboards and the cardboards on plastic plates. No center dowels due to (1) plastic plates (2) I never deliver assembled.

the first one I used card board rounds, 2nd one I used plastic plate but had to take it off due to it was to big for the cake..but next time it will be plastic plates and hidden pillars all the way I did use the hidden pillars with the card board round it it did fine, nice and sturdy on all of our bumps and curves icon_smile.gif

Oh - I LOVE those drinks... a thai restaurant makes these fruit smoothies with those tapioca balls in 'em (size of marbles). YUM-O!
