I was contacted today by a mother of the groom who wants to know if I make gumpaste flowers to sell to people to make their own cakes. I've never amde gumpaste flowers, but have done some out of fondant, and they want cal lilys. I've heard they are one of the simpler gumpaste flowers to learn. She said they are broke, so she's making their cake. How much would you charge for cala lilys if you were just selling the flowers? Sounds to me like they're looking for cheap, and we all know gumpaste flowers aren't.

Are you sure you want to do this? I have done gumpaste flowers for someone I know who is in the business, and she paid me what she charged her customer. I am not sure that I would want my decorations on a cake that someone just wants to bake herself. If the cake does not look right with your flowers on it, it will reflect on your reputation.

That's just it...I'm not sure it's a good idea, that's why I wanted to get other's opinions. It really sounded to me like she was trying to get a deal, and thought they would be cheap, but she'd be wrong.

why don't you tell them that you are not comfortable doing it, but that a google search for gumpaste flowers would turn up a place they could buy from?

If they are looking for cheap, I think they should consider silk calla lillies....no one's going to eat the gumpaste ones anyway....just my thought.

Well, the pre-made flowers at CalJava are pretty cheap. It would remove the issue of having your name associated with a cake that wasn't up to your standards......

Thanks everyone. I sent her an email and told her that at this point, I don't feel like it is a good business decision to have pieces that I make put on a cake that I have no artistic say over. I also sent her the link for the website with the premade ones. Thanks everyone!
