I planned this cake for MONTHS - I made a huge Ariel cake for my twin girls' brithday yesterday. I stayed up almost all night on Friday to finish it, then got up yesterday and spent another couple of hours. It had a fondant clam shell on top with her sitting in it. The top was made to look like a beach and there were fish and ocean plants all around it. It was so cute! BUT I made two mistakes and the whole thing was a disaster. First, I really didn't have enough icing, so I decided to fill it with something else - I almost always use instant pudding whipped up with heavy cream which everyone always thinks is mousse becaue it tastes so good, but I thought this might be too rich because the cake was a poke cake, so I thought, well, these are usually frosted with whip cream, so I will whip up some cream with dream whip and use that (thinking that the dream whip would stabilze it). When I put it in, it was nice and thick and held the cake together great. My second mistake was when I put it in the fridge. The cake round that it was on was just big enough to accomodate the border, so I didn't want to have to try and pry the cake off the shelf to get it out - thinking that I would smear the icing. So, I put it in so that the very edge was just hanging off. That way, I could easily grab it to pull it out. So, many hours went by, and I wen tot take it out to the car. By that time, the icing had really set up and was kind of hardened. So, when I pulled it out, the side which had been a bit propped up on the lip of the shelf shifted and the whole thing instantly cracked all along the space between the two layers. UGH! I tried to shore it up, but there was no way. All of the cute decorations I had spent so much time making were ruined. So, I put it on the counter and ran out to get a cake from the grocery store (UGHHHHHHH icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gif ). My husband felt sorry for me and wanted to salvage the cake to eat later - afterall, it would still taste good! So, he put it on a large pizza pan to stabilize it, and as he was walking out to the garage to put it in the fridge, the top layer shifted again because the whipped cream was deflated, and he slipped and fell. The cake went up in the air, and CAME DOWN ON TOP OF HIM!!! icon_eek.gif Icing flew up into the air, he bumped his head, scratched his face...the cake, GONE. Nothing left to salvage. Completely ruined. icon_redface.gif

We had a great party, but I was so sad about my cake.

I'm so sorry this happened to you!! It's soooo dissapointing to work that hard and not have it turn out. Your hubby sounds like a sweatheart! Hope he's ok (although the picture in my head of all that cake coming down on top of him had me laughing my head off!)

He's ok...a scratch on his face though. I asked him which he felt worse about after he fell - his behind or the cake - he said the cake! icon_lol.gif

Oh no what a terrible story! I am sorry to hear of all of your hard work collapsing into a heap...on top of your DH no less! Did you ever get a photo of the decorations? Did you get a photo of your husband covered in cake?? icon_wink.gif Bless his heart for trying so hard to help.

Hugs your way!
