This is a potential customer (my second order if everything goes well), she wanted a two tiers cake but doesn't want butter cake/pound cake. In short, she prefers spongecake with fresh cream (not buttercream). Am worry that spongecake may not be able to support the weight of the upper tier cake. Anyone tried using spongecake before? Please advise if it works. Do I still need dowel/straw to support the upper tier?

I've never done tier cake before, appreciate all your comments and suggestion. It will be 10" and 6" tier.

Thanks in advance.

I usually use sponge cake, and yes- you still need to dowel the top tier! Make sure you brush your layers with a simple syrup because sponge cake is just that- a sponge- and it can use a good soaking or it tends to be a little dry.

I made the two tier spongecake and managed to transport the cake without any problem (Phew!). It's a 10" and 6" cakes with three dowels inserted into the bottom layer.

Thanks. Here's the picture of my cake :

Really adorable- good job! Glad to hear the sponge cake worked for you. A word of caution- next time you might want to use at least 4 dowels to support the top tier, just to be safe. Congratulations on your first stacked cake success!
