oh my.. i made my first batch of MMF today and i am in love...i will now be using it for many many more things...i could kick myself for not trying it earlier!!
my mixer took it well and it worked like a charm. I even colored some tonight too...yay me!!!
oh and the funniest part of it is...i had a ball of MMF sitting on the table , i turned around to take cookies out of the oven and my 3yr grabbed it and started playing w/ it like it was play doh...when i told him he cold eat it he gave me the funniest look and was say.....noway! lol too cute...so he ended up eating and it and then tells my 8 yr old ...hey momy made play doh cookies and we can eat them too....haha i wonder how many people will ask me about feeding my kids play doh...cause ya know kids tell everybody everything.....lmao
Funny! Kids dont care, my 3 yr old daughter eats it too. She will eat a bite and say can I taste the green, can I taste the blue? I made a car cake and some traffic cones out of the MMF for my nephews bday party. Everyone surely thought I was crazy when I told them it was edible! By the way, did you use the mmf on your cookies and if so, what does it taste like. I have some left over mmf from a cake i did this week but wandered how it would taste on halloween cookies i am fixing to do. I love to work with antonia74 royal icing but want to try this too.
i did put it on my cookies, but i have not tasted it yet... i just finished with them about 20 mins ago..and as much as i love them...after i have been messing with them for hours i get to the point that i really dont want to eat them...plus i ate too much mmf while i was doing it ..lol hey what can i say the stuffs good..lol, but when i taste them..tomorrow..ill let you know what its like.
I love it too! My niece (who just turned 5) always makes up names for the colors....and tells me I would like to try the lemon surprise now (for yellow mmf) or the cherry surprise (for red).........and then goes on and on as if they really were lemon and cherry flavored!
Now the only thing I want to do is try the small batch kind...I dont like covering whole cakes with any kind of fondant (to me its just not the same) so I rarely need that much...just for accents.
mkerton- that is the only way i have made mmf is by the small batches. it is much easier to control and believe it or not it goes a long way. i always have leftovers. I couldnt imagine eating a cake covered in pure fondant either, but accents are good!
I agree MMF is wonderful!! The kids I baby-sit for love to play with it (and it somehow magically disappears every time, lol). Had a question though- do you ever have problems with your MMF sticking to the parchment/wax paper when you roll it out? Even with a bit of corn starch mine sometimes sticks (maybe it's because of FL's humidity?). Any suggestions? Thanks!!
I always smear a bit of shortening on whatever surface I am working the mmf on (most often for me its the plastic circle fondant guide thing that came in course kit 3).....and I also put a bit on my rolling pin....then I dont seem to have the problems....
I also use sandwich bags (the cheap kind) as "gloves" if you will as I knead in color....to save my fingers....I hate putting gloves on and the bags just slip over my hand and I toss them when I am done with that color!
i didnt even have to put anything down when i rolled my mmf out tonight...just rolled it on wax paper and it didnt stick..maybe i made it to thick?? but i think ill just keep making it this way if thats the case cause it was esy to work with and the taste was great. now i just want to amke some flavored mmf ![]()
I think it must have something to do with humidity or perhaps because I never seem to be able to get the whole 2lbs of powdered sugar in my MMF...but i have made it before and had zero sticking (as TiffTurtle was talking about) and then I have had stickier times.....its probably just me!
im glad yall were talking about this, cause if i went t make it again it it wasnt right id prolly get mad, but now i know that it might not be the same amount of sugar each time.....thanks for adding that yall.
mkerton- there was a thread on here about doing small batches of mmf. All I do is place one cup of mm in bowl add 1 tbs water and melt about 30 seconds and stir until it is blended, then add the color. Add the sugar-I never use all the powder sugar it recommends. There is always a lot left over and actually I have only been buying 1 lb bags of the confectioners sugar to bag of mm. It is perfect for me. After it has set overnight, i nuke it 5-7 seconds then add a little crisco to my mat and rolling pin and it works PERFECTLY. When I first learned to make it, after it had set overnight , I would nuke it and then keep rubbing more conf. sugar into it, then I would end up having to add a dab of water because it would get too dry, then too wet when i added the water, then you have to worry about dusting the white conf. sugar off the MMF. So I read on here someone said to just use the crisco on the mat, and not add more sugar to roll it. For some reason it bothered me at first adding crisco, but it is perfect and somehow does not alter the taste of it at all.
I make a small batch with 2cup mini marsh
2TBL water(I use almond extract instead)
3-3.5c powder suagr(I sift it!)
Works great. It is actually the souble recipe of small batch from the wilton site. I make about 5 colors at a time so they will be available when I need them later on. I put it in the fridge just because foodstuff always goes there with me--in TX where it is hot, Nuke it a bit and use.
I did 8-10doz cookies last Saturday.
Tiff--you will be hooked and never want to use reg icing ever again-although I still do a few times. Also Anotnia's royal is great for accents. Easy and great tasting!
