Once the buttercream is crusted (I do the Viva thing), will royal flowers stick in the side of the cake without falling off the crusted bc, or do I need to attach them with something like a dot of fresh bc or a dot of royal?

Which will stick better without making a mess? The flowers are not heavy.

Thanks.

I'd just use a little dab of buttercream, it'll hold fine and you don't have the bother of dragging royal icing out.

I agree, just a touch of buttercream should hold it in place.

I have a question about this... Will the buttercream break down the royal icing???? I am making a cake this weekend that will have a royal icing tiara on top, and I was going to have the mom wait until right before the party to put it on top for fear of it breaking down. Just wondering about this. Thanks!!

royal decorations will soften, but not dissolve when they are in contact with buttercream (i.e. a flower on a buttercream cake will become soft but hold its shape). i think it's a good idea to wait until the last minute to put the tiara on, just to be safe.
