Well, I'm in Vancouver for 2 weeks visiting my best friend and her kids before chef school starts and we always do some kind of project together when I'm here. So I say how would you like to help me make a puzzle cake?(Bo Friberg) I have seen the instructions but never tried it before and I've been dying to, and well hey the kids would have fun helping. So we did, and I utterly refuse to share a photo of the end result (as I refused to take a picture of it in the first place lol-lets put it this way, it looked worse than the Teletubby homicide I posted somewhere in the 'post your worst cakes here'). \\Honestly wanted to cry and would have thrown the whole cake out had it not been for the fact that the kids had helped mix the batter and what not.
You all probably have either done it or seen it done. If you havent, I'm just posting these 'notes' for my own sake and also for anyone attempting it- the instructions i had found on chef2chef.com were obviously from a professional beca;use he left out a ton of 'little' steps that would have provided useful to me.
First off, you want to freeze the alternating layers before you cut the cone/funnel out of it, or else as I found out the hard way (we were in a bit of a rush because vthe kids were getting picked up and I wanted them to try the fruits of their labour before they left.)- that it is terribly tricky to lift out a room temp cone shaped piece of cake and turn it upsdie down (there is no icing binding the pieces together). Well maybe there were but he left that step out of the instructions.
Anyway the big thing is it's really crucial that everything is frozen when you're assembling /cuttng the cake. The inside didnt look so bad, could sort of see the puzzle pattern -just that my cake wasnt fully cooled and the outside was not smooth by any means.
Well, back to the drawing board for me (the kids on their way out the door said 'aunty, why dont you try making it again while we're at our sleepover tonighjt?) yeah I think I need at least 2 days break from that so I can get rid of my doubts of ever becoming a cake decorator.

LOL @ me. So I was at the library and I found a video on cakes/desserts amongst other things and didnt watch it until a few days ago...after I had done the puzzle cake - and Bo Friberg is ON the end of the tape and makes his puzzle cake, so yeah I wish I'd have watched that BEFORE lol.
Anyway, besides the fact that I made 8 layers instead of 6 (thus the incongruous shape of the triangles) and didnt ice the surface left after removing the cone shape, everything I did was bang on, the second time around, and looked rather awesome. I will definitely make this again, with different variations on flavours/colours and outside. It's nice to spend all that time making the OUTSIDE of a cake look unique, but this is cool because the inside has a surprise of its own. I really recommend trying it if you havent already.
